Neverwinter Beginner Guide 2026 — Best Class, Leveling and Endgame

Neverwinter is a fast-paced action MMORPG set in the Dungeons and Dragons Forgotten Realms. Combat is active — you aim, dodge, and combo abilities in real time. This beginner guide covers everything from character creation to your first endgame campaigns.

Note: Verified as of July 2026. Check official patch notes for updates.

If you’re looking for Neverwinter, or Neverwinter guide, or Best Class, Leveling and Endgame, you’re in the right place.

Choosing Your Class

Neverwinter has eight classes, each with two Paragon Paths (subclasses) unlocked at level 11. You can switch between paragons freely.

ClassRoleParagon PathsBeginner-Friendly?
BarbarianDPS/TankBlademaster, SentinelYes — forgiving, high HP
ClericHealer/DPSDevout, ArbiterYes — always wanted in groups
FighterTank/DPSVanguard, DreadnoughtMedium — tank responsibility
PaladinTank/HealerJusticar, OathkeeperYes — best solo class
RangerDPSWarden, HunterYes — ranged combat is safe
RogueDPSAssassin, WhisperknifeMedium — squishy, high damage
WarlockDPS/HealerHellbringer, SoulweaverMedium — resource management
WizardDPSArcanist, ThaumaturgeMedium — high damage, squishy

Best starter classes: Barbarian (tanky DPS), Paladin (unkillable solo), Cleric (instant group invites), or Ranger (ranged, safe).

Leveling: 1 to 20

The levelling experience takes 8-15 hours. Follow the main story quests — they are the fastest EXP source.

  • Adventures at levels 5, 10, and 15 give large EXP bursts
  • Random Dungeon Queue — bonus EXP once per day. Queue as whatever role your class supports.
  • Skip side quests unless you enjoy them. They are inefficient.
  • At level 11, choose your Paragon Path. This is a permanent choice for that character.

Item Level (IL) Progression

After level 20, the game shifts to Item Level as your progression metric:

IL RangeContentHow to Progress
20,000–30,000Early campaignsQuest rewards, adventure seals
30,000–50,000Mid campaignsDungeon gear, campaign store
50,000–70,000Late campaignsEpic dungeons, trials
70,000+EndgameMaster dungeons, master trials

Campaign System

Neverwinter’s endgame is structured around Campaigns — extended quest chains that unlock boons (permanent stat bonuses).

Campaign priority order:

  1. Undermountain — Fastest IL gains, unlocks companion gear
  2. Descent into Avernus — Best weapons for new level 20 characters
  3. Dragonbone Vale — Good gear upgrades
  4. Northdark Reaches — Current content, best rewards
  5. Older campaigns (Tyranny of Dragons, Elemental Evil, etc.) — do these for boons after your IL is established

Each campaign has daily and weekly quests. You can work on multiple campaigns simultaneously.

Companions and Mounts (for full optimization, see our Neverwinter Companion Guide and Mount Guide)

Companions and Mounts (for full optimization, see our Neverwinter Companion Guide and Mount Guide) are not cosmetic — they provide massive stat bonuses.

Companions

  • You equip 5 companions and summon 1. All 5 contribute to your stats through the companion bolster system.
  • Best starter companion: Wayward Wizard (AoE damage), Neverwinter Guard (tank), or Dedicated Squire (healing).
  • Upgrade companions with Companion Tokens. A Mythic companion gives 10% more stats than an Epic one.

Mounts

  • Your mount speed is shared across all mounts (account-wide unlock)
  • Mount collars (insignias) provide bonus stats
  • The mount power (combat ability) is the most impactful — choose one that synergises with your class

Astral Diamonds (AD) Economy

Astral Diamonds are the primary currency. You can refine 100,000 raw AD per day.

Best AD sources:

  • Random Dungeon Queue (daily bonus) — 5,000–20,000 AD
  • Random Skirmish Queue — 3,000–8,000 AD
  • Random Trial Queue — 10,000–25,000 AD
  • Selling items on the Auction House

AD spending priority:

  1. Companion and mount upgrade tokens
  2. Enchantments and runestones
  3. Insignias (mount)
  4. Fashion/cosmetics (last)

Summary

Start Barbarian, Paladin, or Cleric. Rush to level 20 through the story. Begin Undermountain campaign immediately for IL. Do daily Random Queues for AD. Level Companions and Mounts (for full optimization, see our Neverwinter Companion Guide and Mount Guide) — they are your biggest stat sources.
