Neverwinter Professions Guide
Neverwinter’s Profession system is an offline crafting and gathering mechanic. Rather than crafting in real-time at a workbench, you assign your character to profession tasks that run in the background — even while you’re logged off. When the timer completes, you receive the crafted item or gathered materials.
How Professions Work
- Open the Profession Panel (default: shortcut in your character menu or through the inventory)
- Select a profession category
- Start a task by assigning the required materials
- Wait for the timer to complete (seconds to hours depending on the task)
- Collect your results
You can run multiple professions simultaneously, but each character has a limited number of task slots that determine how many concurrent tasks you can run.
Task Slots
| Account Type | Task Slots |
|---|---|
| Free to Play | 2 |
| VIP Rank 1+ | Additional slots (up to ~9 at high VIP rank) |
| Additional Slot Unlock | Available for Astral Diamonds / Zen |
More task slots mean more crafting running simultaneously, which scales your output significantly at higher subscription tiers.
Gathering vs. Crafting Professions
Professions fall into two broad types:
Gathering Professions — Collect raw materials:
- Leatherworking (Skinning)
- Prospecting (Mining)
- Salvaging
Crafting Professions — Convert materials into finished goods:
- Alchemy — Potions, elixirs, refinement stones
- Artificing — Off-hand items, magic implements
- Leadership — AD and resources (important for income)
- Jewelcrafting — Necklaces, rings
- Platesmithing — Heavy armour
- Mailsmithing — Medium armour
- Leatherworking — Light armour and footwear
- Tailoring — Robes, cloaks
- Weaponsmithing — Weapons
- Masterwork Crafting (advanced) — High-tier gear from specific recipes
Leveling a Profession
Each profession levels from 1 to 80 (or 1 to 700 in some versions of the system, depending on patch state). Tasks award profession XP. The first 20 levels go quickly; the last 20 are time-gated regardless of materials.
To level faster:
- Run your task slots 24/7 — never leave them idle
- Use higher-quality materials when available to unlock higher-tier recipes earlier
- Complete Resource Nodes on the map (open-world gathering nodes) as you quest
The Leadership Profession
Leadership is historically the most economically valuable profession because high-level tasks directly award Astral Diamonds — the game’s premium currency earnable through gameplay.
At Leadership level 20+, tasks award small amounts of Astral Diamonds passively over time. With multiple characters, this can generate meaningful amounts. The Leadership profession is often the first one new players max out specifically for its passive AD generation.
Note: Professions have been adjusted multiple times through updates, so verify the current Leadership rewards in-game.
Masterwork Crafting
Masterwork Crafting is a separate high-tier system introduced for endgame players. It produces some of the best craftable gear in the game. Requirements:
- Multiple crafting professions at high levels
- Specific rare materials from endgame dungeons and campaigns
- Access to a special Masterwork Recipes book
Masterwork is not beginner content — it’s a long-term goal for dedicated crafters who want to sell high-end gear on the Auction House for significant Astral Diamond returns.
Materials: Where to Get Them
Common Materials
- Crafting drops — Nearly all enemies drop some crafting materials
- Salvaging gear — Old gear broken down yields materials
- Resource nodes — Open world gathering on the map
Rare Materials
- Campaign reward caches — Campaign milestone rewards sometimes include rare materials
- The Auction House — Buy what you need rather than farm it
- Dungeon drops — Specific materials only drop from harder content
What Professions Are Worth It
For most players, the priority order is:
- Leadership — Best passive Astral Diamond income
- Alchemy — Crafts potions used across all content
- Jewelcrafting — Rings and necklaces are always in demand
- Your gear type — Platesmithing, Leatherworking, or Tailoring for your class
You don’t need all professions on one character — many players spread professions across alt characters to maximise task slot efficiency across the account.
Crafting Companions
Some companions in Neverwinter provide bonuses to specific professions when slotted. These are worth using if you plan to heavily invest in one profession, as they can reduce task times or improve output quality.
Quick Tips
- Always keep task slots running — idle slots mean wasted time
- Leadership is the highest-value profession for passive income
- Don’t level every profession on one character — use alts
- Check the Auction House before farming rare materials — it may be cheaper to buy
- VIP membership pays for itself partly through extra task slots
