Rust Best Base Design 2026 — 2x1, 2x2, Triangle Airlock, Honeycomb & God Rock Locations

Your base is everything in Rust. A well-designed base keeps your loot safe. A poorly designed one gets raided in minutes. This guide covers the best base designs from starter to endgame.

If you’re looking for Rust base designs 2026, Rust 2x1 starter base tutorial, or Rust honeycombing guide, you’re in the right place.

2x1 Starter Base (First Hour)

The classic first base. Two foundation squares plus one triangle airlock.

Top-down view:
┌───────┬───────┐
│ Square │ Square │ ← living area + TC
│ 1 │ 2 │
└───────┴───────┘

    ┌──┴──┐
    │Triangle│ ← airlock
    └──────┘

       Door

Materials:

  • 2,000 Wood (floors, doors)
  • 1,500 Stone (walls, upgrade)
  • 100 Metal Fragments (sheet doors)
  • 1 Tool Cupboard

Build Order:

  1. Place 2 square foundations + 1 triangle
  2. Build walls (leave doorways on triangle and front square)
  3. Place TC in back square, authorize
  4. Upgrade foundations and walls to stone
  5. Place two sheet metal doors (airlock concept)

Why this works: Two doors means raiders need 2 C4 or 4 satchels minimum. The triangle airlock lets you open one door at a time. Never open both.

2x2 Expansion (Mid-Game)

Upgrade the 2x1 to a 2x2 when you have more resources.

┌───────┬───────┐
│ Room 1 │ Room 2 │ ← TC room + loot room
├───────┼───────┤
│ Room 3 │ Room 4 │ ← furnace room + sleeping bag
└───────┴───────┘

    ┌──┴──┐
    │Triangle│ ← airlock
    └──────┘

Key additions:

  • TC in the most central room (hardest to reach)
  • Loot room with multiple small boxes or large box
  • Furnace room with 3-4 furnaces
  • Garage door between rooms (stronger than sheet door)

Airlock Tutorial

An airlock is a two-door system where one door is always closed. Essential for security:

Outside → [Door 1] → Small Space → [Door 2] → Base Interior

Rule: Open Door 2 → Close Door 2 → Open Door 1 → Exit → Close Door 1. Never have both open simultaneously.

Advanced airlock: Use three triangle foundations in a line. Each triangle has a door. Raiders need 3 doors’ worth of explosives minimum.

Honeycombing (Anti-Raid Protection)

Honeycombing wraps your base in extra layers of walls. Each layer requires the raider to spend additional explosives.

Single Honeycomb

┌─────┬─────┬─────┐
│ HC │ HC │ HC │ ← extra wall layers
├─────┼─────┼─────┤
│ HC │Core │ HC │ ← core base
├─────┼─────┼─────┤
│ HC │ HC │ HC │
└─────┴─────┴─────┘

Each honeycomb cell is an empty triangle with a reinforced wall facing outward. Raiders must blow through the honeycomb layer, then the core wall.

Floor Stacking

Place half-height floors between full floors to create “bunker” rooms:

  • Ground floor: TC + loot
  • Half-floor: additional loot room (door blocked by full floor above)
  • 1st Floor: sleeping bags + furnaces
  • Half-floor: roof access / shooting floor

Each extra floor layer means more rockets for raiders.

Best Base Locations by Map

Procedural Map

LocationProsCons
Forest (dense tree area)Natural cover, wood supplyHard to spot from distance
Near OutpostSafe recycling, drone shopMore player traffic
Coastal (near Fishing Village)Boat access, divingOpen, visible
Tundra/Snow biomeNodes abundant, less populatedCold damage, harder survival

God Rocks

“God rocks” are large rock formations you build into. Benefits:

  • Unbreakable natural walls (the rock itself)
  • Fewer building materials needed
  • Harder for raiders to determine exact base layout
  • Can build bunker entrances under rocks

Look for large rock clusters near forests and roads.

Base Upkeep & TC

Your Tool Cupboard stores resources for base upkeep. If the TC runs out, your base decays.

Base SizeDaily StoneDaily MetalDaily HQM
2x1 (small)1,000-2,000100-2000-5
2x2 (medium)2,000-4,000200-4005-10
Compound (large)10,000+1,000+50+

Check TC daily. Place at least 24 hours of upkeep in the TC. Use industrial conveyors to auto-feed the TC from external storage.

TC Auth: Authorize yourself on the TC. Anyone not authorized can’t build within 50m. Place external TCs around your base perimeter to prevent raid towers.

Start with a 2x1. Upgrade to 2x2. Honeycomb when you have spare stone. Your base is your lifeline — invest in it.
