Rust Beginner Guide 2026 — First Wipe Survival: Base Building, Monuments & PvP

Rust is the most unforgiving survival game. You’ll die hundreds of times. Other players will raid your base, steal your loot, and grief you relentlessly. This guide helps you survive your first wipe.

If you’re looking for Rust beginner guide 2026, Rust first wipe survival tips, or how to start in Rust, you’re in the right place.

First Hour Priorities

Step 1: Spawn & Gather (0-5 min)

You wake up on a beach with a rock and a torch. Immediately:

  1. Hit a tree for wood (50+)
  2. Hit a stone node for stone (100+)
  3. Find hemp plants for cloth (30 cloth = sleeping bag)

Step 2: Sleeping Bag & Tools (5-10 min)

Craft a sleeping bag (30 cloth). Place it in a bush near where you plan to build. This is your respawn point. You WILL die — the bag is essential.

Step 3: Find Your Build Location (10-20 min)

Run inland. Avoid beaches (too populated). Look for:

  • Near a forest (wood supply)
  • Near a node field (stone/metal/sulfur)
  • Near a road or power lines (barrels = scrap + components)
  • Not near large bases (they will raid you)

Step 4: Build a Starter Base (20-30 min)

Build a basic 2x1 (two foundation squares, one triangle airlock). Use wood walls, upgrade to stone ASAP (wood burns):

[ Floor ][ Floor ]
[Triangle Airlock]
    ↓ Door

Materials needed: ~2,000 wood, ~1,500 stone.

Step 5: Tool Cupboard (TC) & Locks (30-40 min)

Craft a Tool Cupboard (1,000 wood). Place it in your base (back room). This prevents others from building near you. Authorize yourself on the TC. Craft key locks for your doors.

Workbench Progression

TierCostKey Unlocks
Workbench 1 (WB1)500 Wood, 100 Metal Frags, 50 ScrapMetal tools, basic weapons, crossbow, road sign armor
Workbench 2 (WB2)500 Metal Frags, 20 High-Qual Metal, 500 ScrapSemi-Automatic Rifle (SAR), Python, garage door, better armor
Workbench 3 (WB3)1,000 Metal Frags, 100 HQM, 1,250 ScrapAK-47, Bolt-Action, rockets, C4, endgame gear

Focus on reaching WB1 in the first hour. WB2 is the mid-game goal. WB3 is endgame — don’t rush it.

Best Monuments for Loot

Monuments are the primary source of scrap, components, and weapons. Start with low-tier and work up.

Keycard System

Monuments have color-coded doors requiring keycards:

Combat Tips

  1. Don’t engage unless you have advantage. Rust PvP favors the prepared.
  2. Use terrain. High ground, trees, rocks — don’t fight in open fields.
  3. Med stick before fights. Pre-med with a syringe before engagements.
  4. Learn spray patterns. SAR and AK have predictable recoil.
  5. Gear fear is real. Don’t take out gear you can’t afford to lose.

Getting Raided — It Will Happen

Assume your base will be raided. Mitigation:

  • Build multiple small bases — don’t put everything in one place
  • Stash loot — bury a small stash (stash + small box) in a random forest
  • Upgrade to stone + metal ASAP — wood bases burn in seconds
  • Use garage doors — 2 C4 vs 1 for sheet doors
  • External TCs — prevent raiders from griefing your base

Rust is brutal but addictive. Survive your first night, build a stone 2x1, and farm roads. You’ll die hundreds of times — learn from each death.
