Foxhole Building Guide 2026 — How to Build Effective Defences
Building in Foxhole is the art of creating structures that survive artillery barrages, tank rushes, and partisan attacks. A well-built bunker holds the line; a poorly-built one wastes thousands of BMats and gets your team killed. This guide covers effective base design.

Building Tools
| Tool | Use |
|---|---|
| Hammer | Build, repair, and upgrade structures |
| Shovel | Dig trenches and bunker foundations |
| Basic Materials (BMats) | Build everything. Carry 100-200 when building. |
| Concrete Materials | Upgrade Tier 3 bunkers. Expensive, only for critical defences. |
Defensive Structure Tier List
S-Tier — Always Build These
Rifle Garrison (AI Defence) — Automated rifle fire against enemy infantry within range. Prevents enemies from walking up to your base. Every bunker piece should be connected to a Rifle Garrison.
Anti-Tank Garrison — Automated AT fire. Stops enemy tanks from rushing your base. More expensive than Rifle Garrison but mandatory on any front-line base.
A-Tier — Build When Resources Allow
Machine Gun Garrison — Higher DPS than Rifle Garrison, shorter range. Good for choke points.
Howitzer Garrison — Automated artillery counter-battery. Fires back at enemy artillery positions. Expensive (Concrete) but game-changing.
B-Tier — Situational
Watchtower — Provides map intel. Build these everywhere, especially near roads and borders. Cheap (40 BMats). Every region needs watchtower coverage.
Wall (Tier 1-3) — Stops infantry movement. Tier 1 (wood) is temporary. Tier 2 (stone) is decent. Tier 3 (concrete) is formidable but expensive. Do not build walls in front of AI defences — they block your own AI’s line of sight.
Bunker Design Principles
The Bunker Core
Every bunker network starts with a Bunker Core. Upgrade it to Tier 2 before adding pieces. The Core generates the Garrison Supplies that power AI defences. Without Garrison Supplies, your AI defences go offline.
Honeycomb Pattern
Connect bunker pieces in a honeycomb pattern:
[B] [B] [B]
\ | / |
[C] [B] |
/ | \ |
[B] [B] [B]
Where C = Core and B = Bunker pieces with Garrisons attached. This layout ensures every piece is connected and covered by overlapping AI fire.
The 7-Second Rule
Enemies can suppress AI Garrisons by firing at them for 7 seconds. After 7 seconds of sustained fire, the Garrison goes offline temporarily. Counter this by:
- Building multiple overlapping Garrisons (so suppressing one does not open a gap)
- Placing Garrisons behind cover (so enemies cannot fire at them easily)
- Having infantry defend the base (players are harder to suppress than AI)
Trench and Foxhole Design
- Do not build long, straight trenches. They become kill corridors for enemy grenades.
- Zigzag your trenches. Every 5-10 metres, add a 90° turn. This limits grenade radius.
- Add firing steps (sandbags on one side). Gives friendly infantry cover while exposing enemies.
- Barbed wire at choke points slows enemy infantry. Combine with MG Garrisons for maximum effect.
Do Not Be a “Facility Griefer”
Facilities are player-built production centres (not defensive structures). Building a facility in the middle of a frontline blocks defensive construction and obstructs vehicles. Build facilities in the backline, near logistics hubs.
Summary
Always build Rifle Garrisons and Anti-Tank Garrisons. Use honeycomb bunker patterns. Zigzag trenches. Keep Garrison Supplies stocked. Do not block AI line of sight with walls. Build watchtowers everywhere. Build facilities in the backline.
