Destiny 2: Codename Frontiers - How to Decrypt Anomalous Engrams

With the launch of Codename: Frontiers, Bungie has introduced a new item type: the Anomalous Engram. Unlike the now-deprecated Umbral Engrams or standard Echoes, these new engrams contain loot from outside the solar system and cannot be decrypted by Master Rahool in the Tower.

If your inventory is full of these glowing blue-black orbs and you don’t know where to take them, you are not alone. Here is how to unlock the decryption process.

Step 1: Reach the Bleak Expanse

You must progress the main campaign until you unlock the new destination, The Bleak Expanse. This typically happens after the introductory mission “Into the Unknown.” Once you have access to the patrol zone, head to Forward Camp Alpha.

Step 2: Locate Fenris, The Heralded

The new vendor for this expansion is Fenris, The Heralded. You will find him near the landing zone in Forward Camp Alpha. Next to him is a large, humming device called “The Sub-Light Loom”.

  • Vendor: Fenris
  • Location: Forward Camp Alpha / The Bleak Expanse
  • Requirement: Complete the quest “Echoes of the Void” (Step 3 of the main questline).

Step 3: Use the Sub-Light Loom

Once you have spoken to Fenris and completed his initial quest, the Sub-Light Loom becomes interactive. You can now decrypt your Anomalous Engrams here.

Cost for Decryption

Decrypting a basic Anomalous Engram costs:

  • 500 Glimmer
  • 10 Starlight Remnants (New planetary material)

Starlight Remnants drop from the “Void Storm” public events in the Bleak Expanse and from resource nodes scattered around the map.

Focusing Engrams

Later in the season rank pass, you uncover the ability to Focus these engrams into specific weapons or armor pieces. Focusing costs significantly more Starlight Remnants and requires you to have unlocked the weapon in your collections first.

Where to Farm Anomalous Engrams

The best sources for farming these engrams are:

  1. Deep Space Dungeons: The final chests in the “Derelict Fleet” activity have a high drop chance.
  2. Anomaly Containment: Completing this Public Event on Heroic difficulty guarantees one Anomalous Engram per day per character.
  3. Core Playlists: Strikes, Crucible, and Gambit have a low chance to drop them upon completion if you have the “Frontier Ghost Shell” equipped.

Conclusion

Don’t delete these engrams! They contain some of the best new weapons in the expansion, including the new Void Trace Rifle archetype. Unlock Fenris as soon as possible to start clearing your inventory space.
