Star Citizen Beginner Guide 2026 — Best Start, Ships and Progression
Star Citizen is the most ambitious space simulation ever attempted — and the most overwhelming for new players. This guide gets you from your first wake-up in a hab to completing your first profitable cargo run.

If you’re looking for Star Citizen, or Star Citizen guide, or Best Start, Ships and Progression, you’re in the right place.
Choosing Your Starting Location
After character creation, you choose a starting city. New Babbage (MicroTech) is recommended for beginners — clean layout, clear signage, and a well-organised spaceport. Lorville (Hurston) is also good. Area18 (ArcCorp) is confusing for new players. Orison (Crusader) is visually stunning but the atmospheric flight takes forever.
Your Starter Ship
Your starter ship determines your early game experience:
| Ship | Role | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Aurora MR | Light fighter/courier | Combat missions, box delivery |
| Mustang Alpha | Light fighter | Combat, faster than Aurora |
| Cutter | Multi-role | Cargo, exploration, all-rounder |
| Avenger Titan | Premium starter | Best all-rounder. Cargo + combat. |
If you can afford the upgrade: the Avenger Titan is the best starter ship. It holds cargo, fights well, and has an interior. If you are spending the minimum, the Cutter offers the most gameplay options.
Your First Session
- Wake up in the hab. Hold F to interact with the door, find the elevator, go to the spaceport lobby.
- At the ASOP terminal (ship retrieval), spawn your ship.
- Follow the signs to the hangar. Enter your ship (F to open doors).
- Turn on the ship (R), request takeoff clearance (F11 → comms → request takeoff).
- Fly out of the hangar. Do NOT fly into the city — fly up to orbital markers first, then quantum travel to your destination.
First mission: Accept a Box Delivery mission from the Mobiglas (F1 → Contracts). These are simple, safe, and teach you navigation. Deliver the box to the destination outpost for 3,000-8,000 aUEC.
Making aUEC (Money)
| Activity | Risk | aUEC/hr | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Box Delivery | Low | 30-80k | New players |
| Bounty Hunting (VLRT) | Low-Med | 50-100k | Combat pilots |
| Cargo Trading | Med-High | 100-500k | Capital investment needed |
| Mining (ROC + Cutlass) | Med | 100-300k | Relaxed gameplay |
| Salvage (Vulture) | Low-Med | 150-400k | Best low-risk income |
Recommendation: Do box deliveries until you can afford a ROC mining vehicle and a Cutlass Black to carry it. Mining is the best low-risk high-reward income for solo players.
Avoiding Bugs and Crashes
Star Citizen is an alpha. Bugs are part of the experience:
- If your ship spawns without components, claim insurance and wait
- If an elevator does not work, try a different server
- If you fall through a planet, hold Backspace to respawn
- If a mission does not complete, abandon it and move on
- Never invest all your aUEC in one cargo run — server crashes are not refunded
Summary
Start at New Babbage. Buy Avenger Titan if budget allows, otherwise Cutter. Do box deliveries to learn navigation. Upgrade to ROC mining for income. Accept that bugs will happen — do not rage-quit over them. Join an org (guild) for group play and mentorship.
