Project Gorgon Beginner Guide: Best Starting Skills for Your First 10 Hours
Project Gorgon drops you onto Anagoge Island with a rusty sword and zero hand-holding. No quest markers. No glowing arrows. Just you, some angry skeletons, and a skill system deeper than most MMOsโ entire character sheets. This guide covers what skills to pick, where to find trainers in Serbule, and how to survive your first 10 hours without rage-quitting.
If youโre looking for Project Gorgon, or Project Gorgon guide, or Best Starting Skills for Your First 10 Hours, youโre in the right place.
Before You Leave Anagoge Island
Anagoge is the tutorial zone. It is small, safe-ish, and packed with things you should do before the boatman takes you to Serbule.
Skills to unlock on Anagoge:
- Sword โ Talk to the training dummy near the starting camp. Free unlock, no trainer needed.
- Archery โ Pick up a bow from the archery range. Ranged damage is a godsend early on.
- Fire Magic โ Learnable from a book in the camp. Massive damage output but drains Power fast.
- Psychology โ Talk to the NPC near the docks. A support/healing combat skill that also boosts your social interactions.
Trade skills to grab:
- Butchering and Skinning โ Talk to the NPC at the campfire. These earn you meat and leather from every kill, which funds your early game economy.
- Cooking โ Learnable from the cooking pot. Turns raw meat into meals that give buffs lasting 30+ minutes.
- Fishing โ Grab a fishing pole and try the docks. Fish sell for decent money to vendors.
Critical tip: Unlock as many skills as you can before leaving. Every skill levels independently, and you want the passive XP from using them ASAP.
Arriving in Serbule: Your New Home
The boatman drops you at Serbule Docks. Follow the road north to Serbule Keep โ this will be your hub town for the next 20-30 hours.
Key NPCs to locate immediately:
- Nelson Ballard โ Inside the Keep. He gives your first proper quest line.
- Echur โ Near the garden. Unlocks Mentalism (healing/damage hybrid).
- Velkort โ On the Keepโs upper floor. Unlocks additional Fire Magic abilities.
- Fainor โ Near the central square. Teaches Cheesemaking and Cooking upgrades.
- Elahil โ At the archery range outside the walls. Unlocks advanced Archery.
Best Starting Combat Skill Combinations
Project Gorgon lets you equip two combat skills simultaneously. You can swap them freely โ there are no permanent class choices. That said, some pairs work far better than others for new players.
Sword + Psychology (Recommended for new players)
Sword gives strong single-target damage and a rage-reduction debuff, making enemies hit less hard. Psychology provides healing and crowd control. This combination is forgiving, self-sufficient, and lets you solo most early content without dying constantly.
Fire Magic + Archery
Pure ranged DPS. Fire Magic annihilates groups with AoE but burns through Power (mana) rapidly. Archery provides a reliable filler damage source and lets you kite enemies. Weakness: no healing. Carry food, lots of it.
Unarmed + Mentalism
Unarmed deals solid physical damage with no weapon required. Mentalism provides healing, recovery, and some psychic damage abilities. A durable brawler build good for players who want to punch things and stay alive.
Sword + Shield
Tanky and straightforward. Shield provides defensive cooldowns and a secondary damage source. Sword provides the main damage rotation. Not flashy, but very hard to kill. Good for learning boss mechanics.
Essential Trade Skills to Level Early
Cooking is the most important early trade skill. Cooked meals grant buffs that last 30 minutes per Gourmand level. Eating new foods gives Gourmand XP, which extends all meal durations. Prioritize cooking anything you havenโt eaten before.
Butchering and Skinning should be leveled on every kill. You need a Butcher Knife in your inventory to butcher corpses (sentient creatures like goblins and humans canโt be butchered). Skinning requires a Skinning Knife. Sell the leather and meat to vendors for early cash, then use them for crafting once you have Carpentry and Leatherworking unlocked.
Carpentry is unlocked from Jara at the western farm. Youโll need wood (foraged from trees or bought from vendors) to make basic tools and storage. Every crafter needs Carpentry at some level.
Alchemy โ Talk to Azalak in the northern woods. Alchemy produces healing potions, buff potions, and poisons. Mandatory for serious combat later on.
Your First 10 Hours: Priority Checklist
- Complete the Anagoge tutorial โ unlock Sword, Archery, Fire Magic, Psychology, Butchering, Skinning, Cooking, and Fishing.
- Farm pigs and wolves outside Serbule Keep โ they drop meat, leather, and low-level gear. Sell everything to vendors until you have 500 Councils (the currency).
- Buy a Butcher Knife and Skinning Knife from the vendor in the Keep if you didnโt grab them on Anagoge.
- Cook every piece of meat you find. Eat one of each type for the Gourmand XP.
- Unlock Carpentry from Jara and Alchemy from Azalak.
- Run Serbule Sewers โ the easiest dungeon. Located under the Keep. Kill rats and spiders for XP. The mushrooms growing on the walls give Myconic XP.
- Visit the Serbule Crypt at level 10+. Undead enemies drop bones and necromancy gems, which sell well.
- Talk to EVERY NPC โ many give hidden quests or skill unlocks with no quest marker.
Death and Dying
Project Gorgon handles death differently. When you die, you donโt lose gear โ but dying IS a skill. The Dying skill levels up each time you die, and higher Dying skill reduces the penalty for future deaths. You will die. Itโs expected. Some quests even require specific Dying skill levels.
Your corpse can be looted by other players after a timer. Store valuables in your bank chest inside Serbule Keep before exploring dangerous areas.
Where to Go Next
After 10 hours in Serbule, you should have 2-3 combat skills at level 15+, 5+ trade skills unlocked, and enough gear to survive the trip north to Eltibule. For more detailed zone information, check out the Serbule Complete Zone Guide.
For crafting progression paths across all trade skills, see the Project Gorgon Crafting Skills Guide.
