PokeMMO: Johto E4 Rematch Team Building Guide (No Legendaries)
One of the steepest difficulty spikes in PokeMMO is the Elite Four Rematch system. In the Johto region (recently added), fighting familiar faces like Will, Koga, Bruno, Karen, and Lance feels impossibly hard when their levels scale to yours (typically Lvl 75-85+) and their AI is smarter.
Fortunately, you don’t need shiny legendaries or 6x31 IV perfection to win. A well-built team of standard mons can wipe the floor with them.
Here is the ultimate budget team strategy.
The Threat: Lance’s Dragonite
Lance’s ace is a multiscale monster with coverage moves that can wipe entire teams if allowed to set up Dragon Dance.
Key Counter 1: Mamoswine (The Dragon Slayer)
- Item: Choice Band or Life Orb
- Ability: Thick Fat (Reduces Fire damage from coverage moves).
- Move: Ice Shard (Priority +1).
- Why: Ice Shard bypasses speed checks. If Dragonite boosts its speed, Mamoswine still hits first with a 4x effective STAB move, usually one-shotting it.
Key Counter 2: Starmie (The Special Sweeper)
- Item: Life Orb or Expert Belt
- Ability: Natural Cure (Heals status on switch) or Analytic.
- Move: Ice Beam, Surf, Thunderbolt, Psychic.
- Why: Starmie outspeeds almost everything Lance has except possibly a Scarfed Aerodactyl. Its diverse movepool hits supereffective on 4/5 members of his team.
Supporting Cast (Budget Options)
- Scizor (Technician + Bullet Punch): Great for cleaning up weakened foes or tanking Koga’s Poison types due to Steel typing.
- Gyarados (Intimidate + Dragon Dance): Set up on Bruno’s physical attackers. Once you get +2 Attack/Speed, you can sweep his entire team with Waterfall.
- Blissey (Natural Cure + Softboiled): The ultimate special wall. Use her to stall out Will’s Psychic attacks or Karen’s special dark moves while healing your team with Aromatherapy/Wish.
Strategy Tips
- Lead with Starmie: It can usually one-shot the first Pokemon of most E4 members (Will’s Xatu, Bruno’s Hitmontop).
- Save Mamoswine: Don’t let it take unnecessary damage. It needs to be healthy to revenge kill Dragonite late game.
- Potions: In PokeMMO, you can use items in battle (unlike competitive PvP). Don’t be afraid to spam Full Restores on Blissey to stall out PP.
Conclusion
This team covers almost every type weakness in the Johto League. Focus on obtaining the correct Nature/EVs (Speed + Attack for sweepers, HP + Def for walls) rather than obsessing over perfect IVs. Good luck, Champion!
