There are 40 PokeMMO Gym Leaders across five regions — eight per region — and each badge raises your Pokemon’s level cap. Unlike the original games, PokeMMO rebalances several leaders, gates rematches behind the Elite Four, and enforces an 18-hour rematch cooldown. This guide lists every leader with location, type, and level cap, plus the progression rules that trip up new players.
Already farming badges for money? Our PokeMMO Gym Leader Rematches Guide covers the rematch economy — this guide is the complete story-progression reference.
How Gyms Work in PokeMMO
- 8 gyms per region, each awarding a badge on first defeat
- Every badge raises your level cap — obedience and training limits scale with badges
- After beating a region’s Elite Four, leaders become re-challengable as a repeatable event with an 18-hour cooldown
- You can travel between regions after 4 badges; storylines reset per region (party returns to PC, regional caps apply)
Kanto Gym Leaders
| Leader | Location | Type | Level Cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brock | Pewter City | Rock | 20 |
| Misty | Cerulean City | Water | 26 |
| Lt. Surge | Vermilion City | Electric | 32 |
| Erika | Celadon City | Grass | 37 |
| Koga | Fuchsia City | Poison | 46 |
| Sabrina | Saffron City | Psychic | 47 |
| Blaine | Cinnabar Island | Fire | 50 |
| Giovanni | Viridian City | Ground | 55 |
Kanto is the standard first region. The Brock-to-Misty jump (20→26) is the first real team check — bring Grass or Water coverage early. For Kanto starters, our PokeMMO Beginner Guide walks through the first-region route.
Johto Gym Leaders
| Leader | Location | Type | Level Cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Falkner | Violet City | Flying | 24 |
| Bugsy | Azalea Town | Bug | 29 |
| Whitney | Goldenrod City | Normal | 32 |
| Morty | Ecruteak City | Ghost | 37 |
| Chuck | Cianwood City | Fighting | 39 |
| Jasmine | Olivine City | Steel | 41 |
| Pryce | Mahogany Town | Ice | 46 |
| Clair | Blackthorn City | Dragon | 48 |
Whitney’s Miltank ends runs — pack a Fighting type or a Ghost to wall Rollout. Johto’s gentle early caps make it a popular second region.
Hoenn Gym Leaders
| Leader | Location | Type | Level Cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roxanne | Rustboro City | Rock | 24 |
| Brawly | Dewford Town | Fighting | 28 |
| Wattson | Mauville City | Electric | 33 |
| Flannery | Lavaridge Town | Fire | 35 |
| Norman | Petalburg City | Normal | 38 |
| Winona | Fortree City | Flying | 44 |
| Tate and Liza | Mossdeep City | Psychic | 48 |
| Juan | Sootopolis City | Water | 58 |
Note PokeMMO uses Juan at Sootopolis (Emerald-style) with the highest story cap in the game at 58. Tate and Liza’s double battle demands spread moves or a dark tank.
Sinnoh Gym Leaders
| Leader | Location | Type | Level Cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roark | Oreburgh City | Rock | 27 |
| Gardenia | Eterna City | Grass | 29 |
| Fantina | Hearthome City | Ghost | 34 |
| Maylene | Veilstone City | Fighting | 37 |
| Crasher Wake | Pastoria City | Water | 43 |
| Byron | Canalave City | Steel | 46 |
| Candice | Snowpoint City | Ice | 52 |
| Volkner | Sunyshore City | Electric | 60 |
Sinnoh runs the highest caps overall (Volkner at 60) — most players tackle it fourth or fifth. Fantina’s early Ghost gym punishes unprepared teams; bring Dark coverage.
Unova Gym Leaders
| Leader | City | Type | Level Cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cilan / Chili / Cress | Striaton City | Grass / Fire / Water | 24 |
| Lenora | Nacrene City | Normal | 27 |
| Burgh | Castelia City | Bug | 31 |
| Elesa | Nimbasa City | Electric | 35 |
| Clay | Driftveil City | Ground | 38 |
| Skyla | Mistralton City | Flying | 43 |
| Brycen | Icirrus City | Ice | 46 |
| Iris | Opelucid City | Dragon | 56 |
Striaton fields a trio — you face the leader strong against your starter. Iris’s Dragon team at cap 56 is the gate to Unova’s Elite Four.
Progression Tips
- Suggested order: Kanto → Johto → Hoenn → Sinnoh → Unova (follows cap curves)
- Level cap discipline: overleveled Pokemon disobey — stop grinding 1-2 levels below each cap
- Rematches: beat the regional Elite Four first, then farm leaders on the 18-hour cycle (see the rematch farming guide)
- Money: gym payouts plus re-battles fund competitive breeding — pair with our PokeMMO breeding guide
