PokeMMO Beginner Guide: How to Start and Complete Your First Region

PokeMMO takes the classic Pokemon formula and turns it into a real MMO — shared world, player-driven economy, global trade chat, and PvP ladder. But the game explains almost nothing about its MMO-specific systems. New players make expensive mistakes early. This guide covers region selection, starter Pokemon strategy, the economy, and how to complete your first region without going broke.

Which Region to Start In

PokeMMO currently has four playable regions: Kanto, Hoenn, Unova, and Sinnoh. You pick your starting region at character creation. You can travel between regions later via boats in port cities, but your starter Pokemon is tied to your starting region.

Recommendation: Start in Unova. The pacing is smoother, the Pokemon variety is better, and the Audino grinding method makes leveling dramatically faster than any other region. You can always boat to Kanto later.

Starter Pokemon: What to Pick

Your starter choice matters less than in single-player Pokemon games. You can trade for any starter on the Global Trade Link (GTL), and wild Pokemon variety is much broader than in the originals. Pick based on your first gym matchup:

Unova starters:

• Tepig → Best early game. Fire/Fighting coverage handles the first three gyms well.
• Snivy → Hardest start. Grass is weak to the first Bug gym. Strong late game.
• Oshawott → Balanced. Water handles first gym neutrally, strong mid-game.

Kanto starters:

• Bulbasaur → Easiest Kanto start. Handles first two gyms (Rock, Water) with super-effective moves.
• Squirtle → Balanced. Good early but Brock is tough without Grass moves.
• Charmander → Hardest start. Weak to first two gyms. High payoff later.

The PokeMMO Economy: What New Players Get Wrong

Money (Pokéyen) Fundamentals

PokeMMO runs on a player-driven economy. Everything you buy on the GTL (auction house) was caught, bred, or crafted by another player. NPC vendors pay pennies compared to what players will pay.

How to earn money early:

• Sell valuable held items. Pokemon sometimes hold items like King’s Rock, Dragon Scale, or Metal Coat. These sell for 8,000-40,000 Pokéyen on the GTL. Early on, this is your biggest income spike.
• Sell breeding rejects. Even mediocre-IV Pokemon sell for a few thousand. More on this in the PokeMMO Breeding Guide.
• Farm Amulet Coin from wild Meowth (Kanto) or use Pay Day on trained Pokemon. Doubles prize money from trainer battles.
• Gym rematches. After beating the Elite Four, gym leaders offer daily rematches with much higher payouts.

What NOT to spend money on:

• Potions and Poké Balls from NPC marts. They’re sold at MSRP. Buy from players on GTL for 30-50% less.
• TMs from department stores. Prices are inflated. Player-sold TMs on GTL are cheaper.
• Early-game breeding. Breeding is expensive. Wait until post-game when you have income.

The Global Trade Link (GTL)

Accessible from any PC in any Pokemon Center. This is your auction house. Key tips:

• Search for items by name, not by browsing categories. Faster and more accurate.
• Check “Lowest Price” sort before listing anything. Undercut the lowest price by 1 Pokéyen.
• Listing fees apply. If your listing expires unsold, you lose the fee. Price items to sell within 24 hours.

Leveling Strategy: How to Not Fall Behind

PokeMMO’s level curve is steeper than the original games. Gym leaders have competitive movesets, held items, and sometimes perfect IVs. You can’t just over-level and steamroll.

Audino grinding (Unova only): In shaking grass patches, Audino appears frequently. Audino gives massive XP — roughly 3-4x normal wild Pokemon. This is the fastest leveling method in the game and the primary reason to start in Unova.

For other regions:

• Fight every trainer on every route. Skipping trainers means you’ll be under-leveled for gyms.
• Re-battle trainers using the Vs. Seeker (Kanto) or Trainer’s Eyes (Hoenn). Rematch rewards include money and XP.
• Use the EXP Share strategically. It’s available early in most regions. Put it on your weakest party member and rotate.

Gym Leader Difficulty: Expect Real Fights

PokeMMO gym leaders are not the pushovers from the original games. They have:

• Held items — Life Orb, Choice Band, Leftovers on key Pokemon
• Competitive movesets — Coverage moves, priority attacks, setup sweepers
• Better AI — Leaders switch Pokemon, use healing items intelligently, and target weaknesses

Preparation checklist before every gym:

1. Level your team to the gym leader’s ace Pokemon level +2.
2. Stock up on healing items (buy from GTL, not NPCs).
3. Teach coverage moves via TMs if you’re weak to the gym’s type.
4. Save before entering. You can soft-reset if the battle goes badly.

Post-Game: What Opens Up

After beating your first region’s Elite Four:

• Level cap increases — Your Pokemon can now exceed level 62, up to 100.
• Gym rematches — Daily battles against powered-up gym leaders. Best money source.
• Boat access to other regions — You keep your Pokemon, items, and money across all regions.
• PvP matchmaking — Ranked ladder with seasonal rewards.
• Breeding unlocks — Post-game breeding allows you to create competitive Pokemon with perfect IVs and egg moves.

Common Beginner Mistakes

1. Buying items from NPC marts. Always check GTL first. You’ll save 30-60% on every purchase.
2. Wasting money on early breeding. Wait until you finish a region and have stable income.
3. Starting in Sinnoh or Hoenn first. They are harder. Start Unova, then boat to other regions with your trained team.
4. Selling rare held items to NPCs. An NPC will pay 100 Pokéyen for a Dragon Scale. A player on GTL will pay 20,000+.
5. Skipping trainer battles. Every skipped trainer is missed XP and money. Fight them all.
