EverQuest Beginner Guide 2026 — Best Class, Server and Leveling Path

EverQuest is the grandfather of 3D MMORPGs — launched in 1999 and still receiving expansions. The game is unforgiving by modern standards, but with the right class and strategy, you can thrive. Here is how to start strong in 2026.

Note: Verified as of July 2026. Check official patch notes for updates.

If you’re looking for EverQuest, or EverQuest guide, or Best Class, Server and Leveling Path, you’re in the right place.

Live vs TLP Servers

Your first decision is which server type to play on:

Server TypeLevel CapExpansionsBest For
Live125All expansionsPlayers who want all content, mercs, and modern features
TLP (Time-Locked)VariesUnlocks every 8-12 weeksNostalgic players who want to experience expansions in order

Recommendation for new players: Start on a Live server — Bristlebane or Firiona Vie (free trade rules, high population). TLP servers move fast and the community expects you to know old content.

Best Starting Class

EQ has 16 classes. Some are dramatically easier than others.

TierClassWhy
SMagePet class. Earth pet tanks, you nuke. Safest and fastest soloer.
SNecromancerPet + DoTs + feign death. Nearly unkillable. Slower kills than Mage but safer.
ABeastlordPet + melee. Strong solo, good group utility.
AShadowknightTank with lifetaps. Can solo content other classes cannot touch.
BDruidTeleports, snares, DoTs. Excellent traveller, decent soloer.
BShamanBuffs + DoTs. Slow but steady.

Do NOT start as: Rogue (group-dependent), Warrior (gear-dependent), Enchanter (high skill floor), Cleric (slow solo).

Recommendation: Mage. Summon a pet, cast damage spells, loot. Simple, effective, scales well.

Leveling 1 to 125

EQ is a slow-burn game. Expect 100-200 hours to max level solo, or 40-60 hours with help.

Levels 1-15: Tutorial and Starting Zone

Complete The Mines of Gloomingdeep tutorial. It teaches basic mechanics and rewards you with a full set of starter gear. Leave at level 10-12. Then finish the Crescent Reach newbie quests.

Levels 15-60: The Classic Grind

  • Hot Zones — Daily quests from Franklin Teek in Plane of Knowledge. These point you to zones with bonus EXP.
  • The Serpent’s Spine zones (Crescent Reach, Blightfire Moors, Goru`kar Mesa) — The best-designed leveling path. Follow the quest chain.
  • Mercenary — Hire a Tank merc (if DPS class) or Healer merc (if Tank class) at level 1. Mercs carry you through early content.

Levels 60-85: Dragons of Norrath and Beyond

  • Defiant gear drops from most mobs and is level-appropriate. Do not spend platinum on gear before 85.
  • Dragons of Norrath missions give good EXP and gear.
  • Start doing Daily Adventures (from Franklin Teek) for bonus EXP.

Levels 85-110: Modern Content

  • House of Thule (85-90) → Veil of Alaris (90-95) → Rain of Fear (95-100)
  • Call of the Forsaken (100-105) → Empires of Kunark (105-110)
  • At 85, upgrade your merc to a Journeyman tier.

Levels 110-125: Current Expansion

  • Follow the current expansion questline. It gives the fastest EXP and best gear for your level.
  • Join a guild. Group EXP in current content is 3-5x faster than solo.

Defiant Gear System

For a full breakdown of every tier, see our Defiant Gear Guide. Defiant gear is randomised loot that scales to your level. It drops from almost any mob. Until you reach 85, Defiant gear is better than almost anything else you can obtain. Check the Bazaar (auction house) for cheap Defiant pieces if you are missing slots.

Mercenaries

Mercs are available from level 1. They are free through the tutorial and cost platinum to hire afterward.

  • Apprentice Tier (free/cheap) — Basic AI. Fine for levels 1-60.
  • Journeyman Tier — Better AI, more abilities. Worth upgrading at 60+.
  • At level 85, you can complete a quest for the Journeyman Rank 5 merc (strongest tier).

Summary

Start Mage on Bristlebane or Firiona Vie. Do the tutorial. Hire a Tank merc. Follow the Serpent’s Spine questline to 60. Use Defiant gear drops. Join a guild at 85+. EQ is a marathon, not a sprint — enjoy the journey.
