Tradeskill Overview

There are 9 tradeskill professions, organised into three categories:

CategoryProfessionsWhat They Make
ScholarSage, Alchemist, JewellerSpell upgrades, combat arts, jewellery
OutfitterArmourer, Tailor, WeaponsmithMetal armour, cloth/leather armour, weapons
CraftsmanProvisioner, Carpenter, WoodworkerFood/drink, house items, shields/bows

You can have one profession per character. Tradeskilling is levelled independently of your adventure level — a level 10 adventurer can be a level 130 Grandmaster Crafter.

How Crafting Works — The Reaction Arts System

EQ2’s crafting is an active mini-game, not a “click and wait” system. When you start a crafting combine, you see three bars:

  • Progress Bar — Fill this to complete the item. Filling it faster means quicker combines, but rushing risks failure.
  • Durability Bar — If this hits zero, the combine fails and you lose some materials. Keep it above 25% to be safe.
  • Success Chance — Each ability has a % chance to succeed. Higher skill = higher success.

You have six Reaction Arts (abilities) mapped to keys 1-6, unlocked as you level:

  1. Progress-increasing arts (build the item faster, cost durability)
  2. Durability-restoring arts (fix mistakes, slow progress)
  3. Counter arts — respond to events (green/blue/red icons) for bonuses or to avoid penalties

During a combine, random events flash on screen. Hit the matching counter art (or a close match) to gain a buff. Ignore them and you take a durability penalty. At high levels, chaining counters perfectly lets you complete combines in 3-4 rounds instead of 6-8.

Beginner rotation: Open with your best progress art, then alternate between a durability art and a progress art. Counter events as they appear. At 50%+ progress, spam progress arts to finish. As your skill increases, you will find the optimal rhythm for each recipe tier.

Best Professions for Profit

S-Tier — Always in Demand

Sage — Crafts spell and combat art upgrades for mages and priests. Every spell level upgrade requires a new scroll. The game has 26 classes, each with 30+ spells. Demand is infinite. Sages are the richest crafters on every server.

Alchemist — The fighter equivalent of Sage. Crafts combat art upgrades for tanks and scouts. Same infinite demand logic.

Provisioner — Crafts food and drink. These are consumable. Raiders go through stacks of top-tier provisions every night. Consistent, reliable income — lower margins than sages but steadier sales.

A-Tier — Good Income

Jeweller — Crafts jewellery, scout combat arts, and charm slot items. Jewellery upgrades are always needed. Less demand than sages/alchemists but good margins.

Woodworker — Crafts bows, shields, and totems. Totems are consumable and sell well. Bow demand is solid for rangers and beastlords.

B-Tier — Niche

Armourer, Tailor, Weaponsmith — Gear crafts. These are important when a new expansion launches and everyone needs gear. Between expansions, demand drops because instance drops are usually better. Good for launch windows, slow otherwise.

Levelling Tradeskills Fast

Every tradeskill levels from 1 to 130 through crafting combines. The fastest path:

  1. Level 1-20 — Tutorial quests in your starting city tradeskill instance
  2. Level 20-95 — Rush order writs (repeatable crafting quests). Best EXP per minute.
  3. Level 95-110 — Planes of Prophecy tradeskill timeline
  4. Level 110-120 — Blood of Luclin tradeskill quests
  5. Level 120-130 — Reign of Shadows tradeskill timeline

Pro tip: Buy the Tradeskill Accelerator from the cash shop during a sale. It doubles tradeskill EXP for an hour. Combined with writs, you can go from 20 to 95 in under 2 hours.

Harvesting

You need raw materials to craft. You can buy them from the broker, but prices add up fast. Alternative:

  • Pack Pony (cash shop item) — Automatically harvests nodes as you run past them. The single best quality-of-life purchase for crafters.
  • Harvesting mercenary — Some mercs have harvesting bonuses.
  • Harvesting depot — Guild amenity that stores shared materials.

Making Platinum (EQ2 Gold)

Once you are max level:

  1. Research recipes for the current expansion. These require rare components from dungeons or the broker.
  2. Craft Expert and Master-level upgrades. These are the bread-and-butter money makers. Advertise in chat or list on the broker.
  3. Fulfill custom orders. Players will pay a premium for specific items crafted on demand.
  4. Sell during launch windows. When a new expansion drops, gear crafters (Armourer, Tailor, Weaponsmith) make fortunes. Save materials in advance.

Summary

Pick Sage or Alchemist for maximum profit. Level through writs (20-95) and questlines (95-130). Buy a Pack Pony for automated harvesting. Stockpile materials before expansion launches and sell gear during the rush.
