EverQuest II Beginner Guide 2026 — Best Class, Leveling and Progression

EverQuest II is one of the most content-rich MMORPGs ever made. With 26 classes, hundreds of zones, and two decades of expansions, starting fresh in 2026 is daunting. This guide gives you the fastest path from character creation to endgame.

Choosing Your Server and Class

Server choice: Pick a live (standard) server — Maj’Dul or Skyfire have the highest populations. Avoid TLE (Time-Locked Expansion) servers as a new player; they progress slowly through old content with different rules.

Class recommendations for new players:

Archetype	Best Beginner Class	Why
Fighter (Tank)	Paladin	Self-healing, strong AoE threat, very forgiving
Priest (Healer)	Fury	Druid healer with strong DPS. Fast soloer, always wanted in groups
Mage (DPS)	Necromancer	Pet class. Your pet tanks while you DPS. Safest solo class.
Scout (DPS)	Beastlord	Pet scout hybrid. Strong solo, good group DPS. Complex but rewarding.

If you want the absolute easiest start: Necromancer. The pet handles everything while you learn the game.

Leveling 1 to 130

The level cap is 130. Getting there takes 30-60 hours depending on your pace.

Fastest leveling path:

Tutorial (level 1-5) — Complete the Outpost of the Overlord or Queen’s Colony tutorial. Takes 30 minutes.
Agnostic Dungeons (level 5-95) — Queue for the Agnostic Daily Dungeon. These scale to your level and give massive EXP. One run = 3-5 levels.
Heroic characters (level 100 boost) — If you buy a Heroic Character (cash shop), you start at level 100 with gear and AA. Strongly recommended if you want to skip the 20-year level grind.
Planes of Prophecy timeline (level 100-110) — Best EXP for this range.
Blood of Luclin timeline (level 110-120) — Fast questing, good gear rewards.
Reign of Shadows timeline (level 120-130) — Current expansion content. Best gear.

Alternate Advancement (AA) Points

AA points are a secondary progression system. You earn them alongside regular EXP. Spend them in the AA tree (press L) to enhance your abilities.

Priority for every class:

Run speed and mount speed AAs first (mobility = faster everything)
Class-specific damage/healing AAs
Utility AAs (harvesting, tradeskills (see our EQ2 Tradeskill Guide))
Defensive AAs (HP, resists)

Set your AA slider (bottom of the AA window) to 50% while leveling. This splits EXP between adventure levels and AA points.

Mercenaries

Mercenaries are AI companions you hire for a small gold upkeep. They fill whatever role you lack.

Best merc for solo play:

Kenny (Inquisitor) — Healer merc, strongest healing output. Available in Freeport or Qeynos.
Stamper Jeralf (Mystic) — Wards before healing, safer than pure healers.
Venture Captain Varlos (Berserker) — If you play a healer, bring a tank merc.

Endgame Gearing

At level 130, your gear progression is:

Solo quest gear — Complete the Reign of Shadows timeline. Full set of starter endgame gear.
Heroic dungeon gear — Run heroics for upgrades. Queue through the Dungeon Finder.
Raid gear — Join a guild and start raiding. EQ2 raids are 24-person instances.
Crafted gear — Max-level tradeskilling produces competitive gear. Expensive but consistent.

EQ2 has the deepest crafting system of any MMORPG. You can level tradeskills (see our EQ2 Tradeskill Guide) independently of adventure level. Sage (spell upgrades), Alchemist (combat arts), and Provisioner (food/drink) are the most profitable.

Summary

Start Necromancer or Paladin. Do Agnostic Dungeons until 95, then follow expansion timelines. Set AA slider to 50%. Hire Kenny the Inquisitor merc. Join a guild on Maj’Dul or Skyfire.
