Diablo IV is Blizzard Entertainment’s latest entry in the iconic action RPG series. Released in June 2023, it features an open world set in the dark, gothic world of Sanctuary, five playable classes, and a deep endgame system built around Nightmare Dungeons, Helltides, and seasonal content. The game is available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
Getting Started
After a cinematic introduction, you’ll create your character and begin in Kyovashad, the main hub city. The early game follows the main campaign, which teaches combat, exploration, and the core loot loop.
Campaign Structure
The main campaign is divided into Acts that span the five regions of Sanctuary:
- Fractured Peaks — Starting area. Learn basic combat and exploration.
- Scosglen — Druid territory with werewolf and bear spirits.
- Dry Steppes — Barbarian homeland with desert landscapes.
- Kehjistan — Mage territory with ancient ruins.
- Hawezar — Necromancer region with swamps and darkness.
The campaign takes approximately 40-60 hours and unlocks World Tiers, which control difficulty and loot quality.
World Tiers
World Tiers determine your difficulty and what content you can access:
- Adventurer (WT1) — Starting difficulty. Learn the game.
- Veteran (WT2) — +20% XP and gold. Unlock at level 10.
- Nightmare (WT3) — Unlock at World Tier 3 capstone dungeon. Endgame begins here.
- Torment (WT4) — Unlock at World Tier 4 capstone dungeon. Highest difficulty.
Progress through World Tiers as your power increases. Don’t rush — WT3 and WT4 are significantly harder.
Choosing Your Class
Diablo IV features five classes, each with three specializations (called “Paragon Boards” in endgame):
Barbarian
- Arsenal System — Switch between four weapons mid-combat for different effects.
- Best for: Beginners who want straightforward melee combat with high survivability.
- Key skills: Whirlwind (spin to win), Hammer of the Ancients (burst damage), Rupture (bleed DPS).
Sorceress
- Enchantment System — Slot skills into enchantment slots for passive effects.
- Best for: Ranged players who enjoy elemental magic and crowd control.
- Key skills: Fireball (projectile), Ice Shards (burst), Chain Lightning (AOE).
Rogue
- Combo Points — Build combo points through basic attacks, spend on powerful skills.
- Best for: Fast-paced players who enjoy high skill ceilings.
- Key skills: Twisting Blades (melee), Flurry (AOE), Penetrating Shot (ranged).
Druid
- Shapeshifting — Transform between human, werewolf, and bear forms.
- Best for: Players who want versatile playstyles with summons.
- Key skills: Storm Claw (werewolf), Pulverize (bear), Tornado (human).
Necromancer
- Book of the Dead — Summon skeletons, mages, or golems with different configurations.
- Best for: Beginners who want minion-based gameplay with minimal micromanagement.
- Key skills: Decompose (summons), Blood Surge (life steal), Bone Storm (AOE).
Beginner recommendations: Barbarian (simple melee) or Necromancer (summons carry you through early content).
Paragon Board (Post-Campaign Progression)
After completing the campaign, you unlock the Paragon Board — Diablo IV’s endgame progression system. Key concepts:
- Paragon Points — Earned from XP after level 50. Each point unlocks a node on the board.
- Board Slots — Multiple boards you can attach in different configurations.
- Glyphs — Socket into boards to provide area-of-effect bonuses.
- Nodes — Dexterity, Intelligence, Strength, Willpower, and special nodes.
Focus on filling out the boards that complement your build first. You can respec your Paragon Board for gold at any time.
Nightmare Dungeons
Nightmare Dungeons are Diablo IV’s primary endgame activity. Key mechanics:
- Nightmare Sigils — Keys that modify existing dungeons with affixes (extra monsters, environmental hazards, etc.).
- Tier System — Sigils range from Tier 1 to Tier 100+. Higher tiers = better loot.
- Glyphs — Complete Nightmare Dungeons to earn Glyph XP for your Paragon Board.
- Loot — Nightmare Dungeons drop Sacred and Ancestral gear (the best items in the game).
Start with low-tier Nightmare Dungeons and work your way up as your gear improves.
Helltides
Helltides are timed open-world events that occur every hour in different zones. Key mechanics:
- Cinder Currency — Kill enemies during Helltides to collect cinder.
- Tortured Gifts — Spend cinder at special chests scattered across the Helltide zone.
- Mystery Chests — The most valuable chests cost 175 cinder and drop guaranteed legendaries.
- Zone Rotation — Helltides rotate between different zones each hour.
Helltides are one of the best ways to farm legendary items and crafting materials.
Seasons and Live Service
Diablo IV operates on a seasonal model:
- Seasons — Every 3 months, a new season launches with unique mechanics, a battle pass, and a season journey.
- Seasonal Characters — Your seasonal character resets at the end of each season, but your Paragon Board and stash are shared.
- Battle Pass — Free and premium tracks with cosmetics and rewards.
- Season Journey — Quest-like objectives that unlock cosmetics and rewards.
Seasons keep the game fresh and provide regular reasons to return.
PvP (Fields of Hatred)
Diablo IV features optional PvP in the Fields of Hatred zones:
- Seeds of Hatred — PvP currency earned by killing other players.
- Red Dust — Convert Seeds of Hatred at altars to claim permanent rewards.
- PvP Vendor — Spend Red Dust on exclusive cosmetics and mounts.
- Risk vs Reward — Other players can attack you to steal your Seeds.
PvP is completely optional but provides exclusive rewards.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Ignoring the Codex of Power — Extract legendary aspects from dungeons to permanently unlock them for your build.
- Hoarding Legendaries — Salvage or extract aspects from legendaries you don’t need. Don’t fill your stash with useless gear.
- Not Upgrading Potions — Find Altars of Lilith to increase your potion capacity. Max is 9 potions.
- Rushing to Endgame — The campaign teaches you the game’s systems. Don’t skip it.
- Ignoring Seasons — Each season brings new mechanics and rewards. Jumping in mid-season is fine.

- Complete the Codex — Extract aspects from dungeons to permanently improve your build.
