Best Archetypes Tier List (2026)

City of Heroes has 15 archetypes (classes). Each has unique power combinations.

TierArchetypes
S-TierBrute, Corruptor, Mastermind
A-TierScrapper, Tanker, Blaster, Dominator
B-TierStalker, Controller, Defender, Sentinel
C-TierArachnos Soldier, Arachnos Widow, Warshade, Peacebringer

S-Tier Breakdown

Brute (Tank + Damage): The most popular archetype. Fury mechanic increases damage as you fight. Extremely solo-friendly, excellent in teams. Best for new players.

Corruptor (Ranged + Buff/Debuff): Ranged damage that scales with enemy health. The “Scourge” mechanic deals extra damage to low-health enemies. Great team support.

Mastermind (Pets + Support): Summon and command minions. Six pets at once. Soloing machine — your pets do the tanking and damage while you debuff.

Best for Beginners

  1. Brute — tanky, simple, effective solo and in groups
  2. Scrapper — high melee damage, self-sufficient
  3. Blaster — pure ranged damage, glass cannon

Power Leveling Guide

Fast Leveling Path (1-50)

Level RangeActivityXP/Hour
1-10Atlas Park missions + street sweepingFast
10-20Team mission arcs (The Hollows, Faultline)Fast
20-30Task Forces (Positron, Synapse)Very Fast
30-40Task Forces + AE farmingVery Fast
40-50ITF (Imperious Task Force), AE farmingFastest

Architect Entertainment (AE) Farming

AE lets players create custom missions. Farms are custom missions packed with easy enemies for maximum XP.

Best AE farm: Search “AE farm” in the architect. Look for:

  • Fire farms (Burn tanks clearing entire spawns)
  • S/L (Smashing/Lethal) farms
  • “Afk farm” or “auto farm” missions

Warning: AE farming is fast but teaches you nothing about the game. Balance farming with real content.

IO Set Builds (Endgame)

At level 50, you can start collecting Invention Origin (IO) sets. These are slottable enhancements with set bonuses.

How IO Sets Work

  1. Regular enhancements lose value as you level
  2. IO enhancements stay effective permanently
  3. Slotting 3+ IOs from the same set grants set bonuses
  4. Set bonuses include: +damage, +recharge, +defense, +resistance

Building Your First IO Build

  1. Reach level 50
  2. Earn Influence (currency) — AE farming is fastest
  3. Buy IOs from the Auction House
  4. Use Mids’ Hero Designer to plan your build first
  5. Slot sets that maximize your defense/resistance caps

Budget build: ~50-100 million Influence Endgame build: ~500 million+ Influence

Community & Events

City of Heroes has one of the best MMO communities. Essential activities:

  • Weekly costume contests — show off your hero design
  • Supergroup (guild) recruitment — join for team content
  • Seasonal events — Halloween and Winter events with unique rewards
  • Roleplay communities — especially on Everlasting shard

City of Heroes Homecoming proves a passionate community can keep a dead MMO alive — and thriving — for over a decade. Start with a Brute, join teams, and enjoy the best character customization in gaming history.
