Wurm Online Beginner Guide 2026 — Best Start, Skills and Terraforming

Wurm Online is the deepest sandbox MMORPG ever made. You can terraform the landscape, build entire villages, craft every item, and shape the world — but first, you must survive. This guide covers your first days in the world of Wurm.

Note: Verified as of July 2026. Check official patch notes for updates.

If you’re looking for Wurm Online, or Wurm Online guide, or Best Start, Skills and Terraforming, you’re in the right place.

Server Choice

Wurm has two server clusters: Freedom Isles (PvE, non-PvP) and Chaos (PvP, full loot). Start on Freedom Isles — specifically Xanadu (largest server, most active community). PvP on Chaos is brutal and unforgiving for new players.

Your First Day

You spawn in a starter town (The Howl, Green Dog, or Samling). Talk to the NPC guide for tutorial quests. Gather basic materials: cut down trees (axe), dig clay/dirt (shovel), mine rock (pickaxe). Craft a mallet and a carving knife — these are your most-used tools for the first week.

Build a small 2x2 wooden shack with a bed. Sleep in the bed to set your respawn point. This is critical — dying in Wurm without a respawn point sends you back to the starter town, possibly hours away.

The Skill System

Wurm’s skill system is use-based. You gain skill by doing — there are no levels or classes. Skills are divided into characteristics (Body, Mind, Soul) and sub-skills (Carpentry, Mining, Digging, etc.). Specialise in a few skills rather than spreading thin. Carpentry, Digging, and Mining are the most useful early skills.

Terraforming

Wurm’s defining feature is its terraforming system. You can:

  • Dig to lower terrain
  • Drop dirt to raise terrain
  • Flatten to create level ground
  • Mine to carve tunnels and caves

Terraforming is slow and methodical. Moving one tile of dirt takes real-world minutes. Building a flat area for a village can take days. This is not a bug — Wurm is designed to reward patience and long-term investment.

Joining a Village

Solo play is possible but slow. Most new players join an established village or start their own with friends. Villages provide shared storage, crafting stations, and protection from decay. Use the in-game recruitment board or Wurm’s forums/Discord to find a village.

Summary

Start on Xanadu (Freedom Isles). Craft basic tools. Build a shack and set your respawn. Focus on Carpentry, Digging, and Mining. Join an existing village for shared resources. Embrace the slow pace — Wurm is about the journey, not the destination.

Essential Tools and Their Uses

Carving KnifeCarpentryMake planks, shafts, handles
MalletCarpentryBuild structures, repair
SawCarpentryCut logs into planks faster

ShovelDiggingDig dirt, flatten terrain

Smithing HammerBlacksmithingCraft metal tools and weapons

Craft a Carving Knife and Mallet first. These two tools unlock every basic recipe. Upgrade to iron tools as soon as possible — iron tools have 3x the durability of wooden ones.

Experience Gain and Skill Priorities

Skills level through use, not combat. There are no levels — your character IS their skills. Early priority:

  1. Carpentry to 20 — Unlocks wooden structures, basic furniture, and the cart (mobile storage).
  2. Digging to 15 — Flattening land for buildings. The most time-consuming early skill.
  3. Mining to 20 — Iron tools unlock everything. Find an iron vein (use prospecting) and tunnel it.
  4. Blacksmithing to 20 — Craft your own iron tool set.

After these four, you are self-sufficient. Branch into Farming, Cooking, or specialised crafting based on what your village needs.
