Prey is Midnight’s opt-in open-world hunt system: you pick a powerful target from the Hunt table, accrue Anguish across the zone’s world content until Astalor’s crystal pinpoints their hideout, then fight them one-v-one, no group help, no raid assistance in a summoned arena. It’s the bite-sized endgame for players who don’t raid or press Mythic+ — gear up to the Hero track from the outdoors, with mounts and transmog on top.
Note: Verified September 17, 2026 against Blizzard’s official Prey post, the Wowhead Patch 12.1 guide and the Icy Veins breakdown. Season 2 (Patch 12.1, live since August 18) added a fresh Preyhunter’s Journey track and the Coiled Isle hunts.
How to Unlock Prey
- Reach level 90 in Midnight.
- Head to Magister Astalor Bloodsworn in Murder Row, Silvermoon City — take the quest Prey: Astalor’s Initiative.
/way 2393 55.0 63.4is the spot. - Complete the short intro questline, and the Hunt table in Astalor’s Sanctum opens the contract list.
- Hard and Nightmare hunts unlock after you clear your first Normal hunt and Astalor’s follow-up quest.
How a Hunt Works
Each hunt runs the same loop, tuned by difficulty:
- Pick a target at the Hunt table — each contract shows its combat modifiers and rewards up front. One hunt per difficulty per zone per week.
- Do world content in the target’s zone. World quests, rares, treasures, and zone events all feed Anguish into Astalor’s crystal.
- Watch for the ambush. Your prey attacks you at random while you’re out in the world — survive it and you bank big Anguish. Going AFK or dying costs you progress on Hard/Nightmare, because Torments keep stacking while you’re exposed.
- Fill the crystal → location revealed. When the UI crystal fills, click it to mark the target’s hideout on your map.
- Summon and duel. Interact with the big crystal at the hideout — this creates a 1v1 mini-instance ring. Kill the target or die trying. Turn-in is instant from the same spot.
Pro tip that saves hours: the ambush → fight-off cycle fills your progress bar faster than hunting map activities. Leisurely doing every Prey activity in the zone is the slow way; brawl your prey every time it jumps you.
The Three Difficulties
| Difficulty | Rules | Rewards |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Open-world assist allowed — other players can help kill your target | Base chest, standard gear track |
| Hard | Torments stack (+2% damage per stack while hunting), die and lose hunt progress, no raid assist, Sanctuary hubs pause mechanics | Better chest, higher Mistcrests, stronger Vault |
| Nightmare | Hardest of the three tiers plus full Torment stack and solo arena | Champion-to-Hero track gear, top cosmetics, max Great Vault |
Torment = zone-wide affixes that apply to you while hunting (think heroic world-tier rules that only apply if you opted in). Non-Prey players share your phase unaffected — the system deliberately avoids splitting the world.
Limit: one hunt per difficulty per week per zone — the one exception is the Coiled Isle (Patch 12.1), which offers two Hard and one Nightmare per week.
What Hunts Reward
Every completed hunt pays out (quality scales with difficulty):
- 1,000 Preyseeker’s Journey (the 10-rank seasonal track — rank 10 unlocks custom hunts)
- Preyseeker’s Chest with Hero-track gear
- Mistcrests (Midnight’s gear upgrade currency)
- 75 Coffer Key shards — extra keys for Bountiful Delves
- Great Vault progress on the World reward track
- Cosmetics: mana-wyrm mounts, transmog appearances, companion pets, housing decor
Patch 12.1’s rank-10 vendor (Construct V’anore) stocks the whole cosmetic shop for Remnants of Anguish — hunts drop them, so the track is self-funding.
Is Prey Worth Your Time?
If you only raid or push Mythic+, Prey is a side dish. But as a solo/account-loop it’s the best gear-per-hour in Midnight outdoor play: 20 minutes per hunt for Chest-tier loot at Mistcrest upgrade track, three hunts a week, per character. Delves-first players treat it as their outdoor weekly; alts in Adventure Mode can run every hunt again once unlocked.
FAQ
