Ultima Online (1997) is the original sandbox MMORPG, and the free Outlands server has kept it alive and thriving into 2026. With no classes, no levels, and complete player freedom, UO is unlike any modern MMO — and this guide gets you started.
Getting Started on Outlands
Outlands is the most popular UO private server, with a custom map, balanced skills, and thousands of active players.
Server Basics
| Setting | Info |
|---|---|
| Server | UO Outlands |
| Free to play | Yes |
| Skill cap | 720 total skill points |
| Account limit | 3 accounts, 1 character each (multi-boxing allowed with limits) |
| Era | UO Renaissance-style with modern improvements |
Creating Your First Character
UO has no classes. You build your character through skills. Your first decision is your template — the combination of skills you’ll train to 720 total.
Best beginner templates:
| Template | Skills | Playstyle |
|---|---|---|
| Bard | Provocation, Musicianship, Magery, Meditation, Evaluating Int | Farm gold safely with monster control |
| Tamer | Animal Taming, Animal Lore, Veterinary, Magery, Meditation | Raise pets to fight for you |
| Warrior | Swordsmanship, Tactics, Anatomy, Healing, Parry, Resist Spells | Melee combat, simplest to learn |
| Mage | Magery, Meditation, Evaluating Int, Resist Spells, Wrestling | Spellcasting, high damage |
Recommendation: Start with a Bard or Tamer — they’re the best for farming gold as a new player. Warriors die too easily without gear.
Skill Training Guide
Skills raise through use. There’s no “level up” — you do the activity and the skill increases.
Fastest Skills to Train
| Skill | How to Train | Time to GM (100) |
|---|---|---|
| Musicianship | Macro: play instrument repeatedly | 6-10 hours |
| Provocation | Provoke monsters onto each other | 15-25 hours |
| Animal Taming | Tame animals repeatedly | 40+ hours (slow) |
| Magery | Cast spells with reagents | 20-40 hours |
| Meditation | Meditate while mana is low | 10-15 hours |
| Swordsmanship | Hit training dummies / fight monsters | 15-25 hours |
Macro Guide (Razor/UOSteam)
Outlands allows skill training macros. Use Razor or UOSteam to automate:
- Open your skill macro tool
- Record the action (e.g., play instrument)
- Set it to loop
- Target yourself or a training target
- Let it run while AFK (within server rules)
Important: Always check server rules on macroing. Outlands allows most skill training macros but bans unattended resource gathering.
Gold Making for New Players
Best Beginner Gold Methods
| Method | Gold/Hour | Difficulty | Requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bard farming (Provocation) | 50-100k | Easy | Bard template |
| Tamer farming | 100-200k | Medium | Tamer with pets |
| Mining + Smithing | 30-60k | Easy | Mining skill |
| Lumberjacking | 20-40k | Easy | Lumberjacking skill |
| Treasure hunting | 100k+ | Hard | Treasure maps, gear |
Bard Gold Farming (Easiest)
- Go to a dungeon (Shame, Despise, Destard)
- Use Provocation to make monsters fight each other
- They kill each other, you loot
- Collect gold + magic items
- Sell magic items to other players or NPC vendors
Why Bards are best for beginners: You never directly fight. Provoke two dragons to kill each other and collect the loot risk-free.
Housing Guide
Buying a house is the UO rite of passage. It’s your storage, your recall anchor, and your status symbol.
How to Buy a House
- Farm gold (see above)
- Find an open plot of land (use Outlands housing map)
- Place a house deed (small house = cheapest)
- Customize or upgrade later
| House Size | Cost (approx) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 100-200k | Starter, 7×7 |
| Medium | 500k-1M | More storage |
| Large/Custom | 1M+ | Endgame housing |
Housing tips:
- Place near a moongate for fast travel
- Place near your farming dungeon
- Secure your house with lockable containers
- Use house storage for bank overflow
Essential First Week Checklist
- Create a Bard or Tamer character
- Train skills to at least 80 (GM target)
- Farm 100k+ gold via bard/tamer
- Buy recall runes to key locations
- Place a small house
- Join a guild (community is everything in UO)
- Learn the PvP red/blue system
Ultima Online rewards patience and community. Join a guild early, train a bard for safe gold, and buy a house as your first major goal. The sandbox freedom is unmatched by any modern MMO.
