Star Trek Online Dilithium Farming Guide 2026 — Max 8K Refinement Daily
Dilithium is the lifeblood of free-to-play STO. You need it for reputation gear, fleet equipment, Phoenix upgrades, and — if you are patient — converting to Zen for C-store ships. Your account can refine 8,000 Dil per day (8,500 with the Fleet Dilithium Mine upgrade). Hitting that cap consistently is the key to F2P progression.
Note: Verified as of July 2026. Check official patch notes for updates.

Passive Sources (No Gameplay Required)
Admiralty System
The Admiralty system is a ship-management mini-game unlocked at level 52. Send ships on missions and collect rewards.
- Ferengi Admiralty — Best Dilithium payouts. Prioritise Ferengi Tour of Duty missions (30,000 Dil bonus every 10th mission).
- Klingon Admiralty — Second best for Dil. Tour of Duty gives Fleet Dil vouchers.
- Federation Admiralty — Least valuable for Dil but decent for XP.
Setup for max Dil: Maintain a large roster of admiralty ships. Buy cheap shuttlecraft from the ship vendor (they cost EC not Dil) to fill out your roster. Run Klingon and Ferengi missions first, skip Federation unless you have extra ships.
Duty Officer System
Unlocked at level 11. Send crew on passive missions.
- Focus on missions in the Operations and Engineering departments — they have the highest Dil payouts
- Contraband turn-ins at the Security Officer: 2,000 Dil per turn-in (limit 1 per day)
- Keep 10-20 Contraband in your inventory. Buy from the Exchange when prices are low (under 50,000 EC each)
Active Farming Methods
Reputation Daily Projects
Each reputation has a daily project that costs 15-30 marks and rewards 340 Dil. With 14 reputations at Tier 6, that is 4,760 Dil per day from a single round of dailies.
Time required: ~3 minutes to click through all projects.
Random TFO (Task Force Operation)
Running one Random TFO per day rewards:
- 1,000-2,000 Dil (box reward)
- Marks for your chosen reputation
- A chance at rare salvage and gear
Time required: 5-15 minutes depending on the TFO.
Event Dailies
During events (Summer, Winter, Anniversary), the daily mission rewards 7,500-25,000 Dil in addition to the event currency. Farm these aggressively.
Ore vs Refined Dilithium
Ore is raw Dilithium. You must refine it to use it. Refinement cap is 8,000 per day per character.
- Ore sits in your inventory waiting to be refined
- Refined Dil is what you spend
If you farm more than 8,000 ore per day, the excess sits in your inventory until you refine it. Veterans often have millions of unrefined ore banked across alts.
Multi-Character Strategy
Dil refinement is per-character. Many players maintain several alts for additional refinement:
- Create a Jem’Hadar character (starts at level 60) for instant Admiralty access
- Run Admiralty and DOFF missions on alts while playing your main
- Pool refined Dil using the Dilithium Exchange (posting and cancelling transfers it)
Dilithium to Zen Conversion
The Dilithium Exchange lets players trade Dil for Zen (and vice versa). The exchange rate fluctuates based on supply/demand.
- Current rate (mid-2026): roughly 500 Dil per 1 Zen
- To buy a 3,000 Zen T6 ship with Dil: 3,000 × 500 = 1,500,000 Dil
- At 8,000 per day: ~188 days of refinement
Strategy: Post Dil on the Exchange during Zen sales (when supply drops and rates improve). Buy Zen when new ships release and players dump Zen for Dil.
Daily Routine for Max Dil
| Task | Dil | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Reputation dailies (14 reps) | 4,760 | 3 min |
| Admiralty (Ferengi + Klingon) | 1,500+ | 5 min |
| Duty Officers | 500-1,000 | 2 min |
| Random TFO | 1,000-2,000 | 10 min |
| Contraband turn-in | 2,000 | 1 min |
| Total | ~10,000 | ~20 min |
Summary
Refine 8,000 Dil per day. Use Admiralty and Duty Officers for passive income. Click through all reputation dailies. Run one Random TFO. Maintain alts for additional refining capacity. Convert Dil to Zen during favourable exchange rates.
