Path of Exile 2: Monk Unarmed Build - “Rolling Thunder” Mechanics

The Monk class in Path of Exile 2 shines when it embraces high mobility and rapid strikes. This build focuses on the “Rolling Thunder” skill gem, utilizing the Storm Weaver Ascendancy to turn your movement speed into devastating lightning damage.

Build Overview

  • Class: Monk
  • Ascendancy: Storm Weaver
  • Main Skill: Rolling Thunder
  • Playstyle: Fast Mapper, High Evasion, Melee (Unarmed)

Key Mechanic: Rolling Thunder

Rolling Thunder is a channeled lightning skill that builds up static charges as you move. When you release the channel (or attack), it discharges this static as a massive AoE shockwave.

  • Scaling: The damage of the discharge scales directly with your Movement Speed.
  • Synergy: The faster you move between packs, the harder you hit when you arrive.

Ascendancy: Storm Weaver

The Storm Weaver notable passives are the engine of this build:

  1. Static Accumulation: You generate Spirit Charges while moving.
  2. Conduit of Speed: 50% of your Movement Speed modifiers also apply to Lightning Damage.
  3. Thunderstep: Your dash skills leave shocking ground, reducing enemy lightning resistance.

Gear: Hand of the Titan

Since this is an unarmed build, you cannot use weapons. The best-in-slot item for this league is the unique gloves “Hand of the Titan”.

  • Effect: Counts as Unarmed. Adds 5-10 Physical Damage per 10 Dexterity.
  • Why it works: These are essentially the “Facebreakers” of PoE 2. They allow you to stack Dexterity (which the Monk naturally has) to scale your base physical damage, which is then fully converted to Lightning via Rolling Thunder.
  1. Rolling Thunder (Main)
  2. Physical to Lightning Support (100% Conversion)
  3. Faster Attacks (Quick discharge)
  4. Pulverise (Area Damage)
  5. Elemental Damage with Attacks
  6. Inspiration (Mana management)

Focus your passive tree on Unarmed Damage, Lightning Penetration, and every Movement Speed node you can reach. This build is incredible for speed-farming maps, though it may struggle slightly on pinnacle bosses without high investment.
