How Romance Works in Palia
Romance in Palia is built on top of the Friendship system. You must first reach Friendship Level 3 with a villager before romance becomes available. Once eligible, gifting them a Box of Chocolates or a Heartdrop Lily unlocks the Romance progress bar and their romance questline.
Palia encourages polyamory - you can romance every eligible villager simultaneously with no negative consequences, aside from occasional jealous dialogue. You can only equip one Villager Pin at a time, but you can collect them all.
Romance Eligibility Requirements
| Villager | Base Requirement | Special Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Einar | Friendship Level 3 | None |
| Hassian | Friendship Level 3 | Friendship Level 4 with Sifuu at Romance Level 3 |
| Hodari | Friendship Level 3 | Friendship Level 4 with Najuma at Romance Level 2 |
| Jel | Friendship Level 3 | None |
| Jina | Friendship Level 3 | None |
| Kenyatta | Friendship Level 3 | None |
| Nai’o | Friendship Level 3 | None |
| Reth | Friendship Level 3 | None |
| Subira | Friendship Level 4 | Requires higher base friendship |

The Gifting System Explained
Each villager can receive one gift per Palian day (resets at 4:00 AM UTC). Gifting increases Friendship, but only specific items increase Romance.
Romance-Specific Gifts
- Box of Chocolates - Increases both Friendship and Romance (once per real-life week)
- Heartdrop Lily - Increases both Friendship and Romance (once per real-life week)
- All other gifts - Only increase Friendship, never Romance
Weekly Wants System
Every villager has four Weekly Wants - items they especially desire that week. These reset Monday at 4:00 AM UTC. You can discover these by chatting with villagers or their friends. Check the Relationships tab in your Player Menu to track them.
Weekly Wants fall into two categories:
- Likes (thumbs up icon) - Good friendship gains
- Loves (heart icon) - Maximum friendship gains
Gifting a Weekly Want item gives significantly more Friendship than regular gifts.
Friendship Levels and Rewards
Reaching each Friendship level unlocks rewards and quests:
Level 1
- Basic dialogue unlocked
- First Weekly Want slot revealed
Level 2
- Additional dialogue options
- Second Weekly Want slot revealed
Level 3
- Villager Key received - unlocks their locked room
- New voice lines and conversations
- Romance eligibility (for most villagers)
Level 4
- Final friendship quest
- Third and fourth Weekly Want slots revealed
- Maximum friendship achieved
Romance Levels and Villager Pins
Romance has its own progression bar separate from Friendship. Reaching Romance Level 3 and completing the Level 3 Romance quest earns you that villager’s unique Villager Pin.
All Villager Pins
| Villager | Pin Name | Pin Description |
|---|---|---|
| Einar | Einar’s Pin | A gift from the fisherman Galdur |
| Hassian | Hassian’s Pin | A token from the hunter |
| Hodari | Hodari’s Pin | A miner’s treasure (requires Romance Level 4) |
| Jel | Jel’s Pin | A tailor’s special creation |
| Jina | Jina’s Pin | An explorer’s memento |
| Kenyatta | Kenyatta’s Pin | A gift from the troublemaker |
| Nai’o | Nai’o’s Pin | A farmer’s keepsake |
| Reth | Reth’s Pin | A chef’s special delivery |
| Subira | Subira’s Pin | A gift from the magistrate |
| Tamala | Tamala’s Pin | A witch’s charm |
| Tish | Tish’s Pin | A furniture maker’s craft |
Note: You can equip up to two pins at a time. Wearing a specific pin may trigger unique Daily Dialogue options. Breaking up with a villager does not remove their pin.
Raising Romance Level
There are only two ways to increase Romance:
- Flirting - Available once per Palian day after unlocking romance
- Gifting Box of Chocolates or Heartdrop Lily - Once per real-life week
This means romance progression is time-gated. Plan your daily logins to flirt with every romanceable villager.
