LOTRO Legendary Items Guide

Legendary Items (LIs) in Lord of the Rings Online are class-specific weapons and class items that you customise with Traceries — slottable bonuses that provide stats, skill enhancements, and passive buffs. Unlike the old LI system (retired in Update 30.3, October 2021), modern LIs are designed to scale with your character indefinitely through reforging rather than requiring you to constantly replace them.

Every class eventually equips two Legendary Items simultaneously and tailors them to their role.

Acquiring Your First Legendary Item

LI quests become available at level 45. The first one is obtained through Volume II, Book 1 of the Epic Quest line:

  • Chapter 9 — Your first Legendary Weapon
  • Chapter 13 — Your first Legendary Class Item

Both quests award an item appropriate to your class. You can also find LIs as drops or purchase them, but starting from the quest is recommended.

Which LIs Does Each Class Use?

Most classes pair a Legendary Weapon with a Legendary Class Item. The exceptions:

ClassLI Slot 1LI Slot 2
HunterLegendary Bow or CrossbowLegendary Melee Weapon
WardenLegendary Melee WeaponLegendary Javelin
All othersLegendary WeaponLegendary Class Item

Class items take different forms depending on class: Captain uses a Legendary Emblem, Rune-keeper uses a Legendary Runestone, Lore-master uses a Legendary Staff + Book, and so on.

The Four Tracery Types

Traceries are the customisation engine of Legendary Items. Each LI has dedicated Tracery slots, and each slot only accepts specific Tracery types.

Heraldric Traceries

  • Slots: 1 per LI (Heraldric slot)
  • Effect: Provides your character’s primary stat (Might, Agility, or Will depending on class) plus Vitality and a secondary stat
  • Key note: Multiple characters on the same account cannot use the same Heraldric Tracery (Unique Use per account)

Words of Power

  • Slots: 1–2+ per LI (Word of Power slots)
  • Effect: Role-defining buffs — offensive, defensive, or healing enhancements
  • Key note: Unique Use per account. Words of Power directly impact your core gameplay by buffing specific aspects of your role.

Words of Mastery

  • Slots: Class-specific
  • Effect: Buffs specific class skills and adds a secondary stat. The stat bonus scales with Tracery quality.
  • Key note: Unique Use per account. These directly empower the skills you use most in your preferred spec.

Words of Craft

  • Slots: Multiple
  • Effect: Adds secondary stats. Slotting multiple Words of Craft of the same type grants set bonuses.
  • Key note: NOT Unique Use — you can equip the same Word of Craft on multiple characters across your account.

Reforging: How LI Item Levels Increase

Reforging is done at Forge-masters, found in major hubs like Michel Delving, Rivendell, and most expansion towns. Reforging raises your LI’s Item Level, which increases DPS and may add new Tracery slots.

You must reforge every 5 levels approximately to keep your LI at relevant Item Level. Waiting too long creates a large stat gap.

131–140499
141–150549
151–160560 (updated Feb 4, 2026 — Update 46.1)

The maximum LI Item Level as of February 2026 is 560, introduced for characters at level 151–160 in the Before the Shadow expansion progression.

Ancient Script: The LI Currency

Ancient Script is the primary currency for purchasing Traceries from the LI vendor.

  • Bound to Account, not character — all characters on your account share the wallet
  • Wallet cap: 10,000 Ancient Script (though Appraisal lets you temporarily exceed this)
  • Earn from:
    • Disenchanting unwanted Traceries
    • Appraising old LIs from the pre-Update 30.3 system (converts them to Ancient Script + Traceries)
    • Reward Track (monthly login/VIP reward track)

Tracery Purchase Costs (Legendary Quality)

Tracery TypeAncient Script CostAdditional Cost
Heraldric2,000+ Cracked Tracery
Word of Power1,500+ Cracked Tracery
Word of Mastery1,000+ Cracked Tracery
Word of Craft1,000+ Cracked Tracery

Cracked Traceries drop from enemies, quests, and skirmishes at appropriate levels. Traceries are purchased from Gobeth Teithian in the Archive of Traceries inside the Last Homely House at Rivendell.

Managing Your Ancient Script Budget

Ancient Script is account-capped at 10,000. Before hitting the cap:

  • Spend Ancient Script on high-priority Traceries for your main class
  • Check both your LIs for which slots need upgrades most urgently
  • Use Appraisal on old LI system items to convert them if you’re clearing bank space

Enhancement Runes: Upgrading Traceries

Enhancement Runes raise the Item Level of individual Traceries, making them more powerful. Each rune raises Item Level by a set amount based on rune quality:

Rune QualityItem Level Increase
Uncommon+1
Rare+2
Incomparable+3
Epic+4

A Tracery’s Item Level cannot exceed the Item Level of your LI itself. So reforging your LI first, then enhancing Traceries, is the correct order.

Unslotting and Replacing Traceries

To remove a Tracery from an LI slot:

  • Cost: 10 Mithril Coins or 1 Tracery Reclamation Scroll

If you simply slot a new Tracery over an existing one without unslotting first, the old Tracery is destroyed. Always unslot first if you want to save the Tracery and reslot it on a different LI.

Tracery Reclamation Scrolls are available from the LOTRO Store.

Dealing With Old LIs (Pre-Update 30.3 System)

If you have old-style Legendary Items (from before October 2021), they display the “Traceries Barred” effect. This prevents you from slotting new Traceries on your character if old-style LIs are still equipped.

To resolve:

  1. Unequip all old-style LIs
  2. Visit a Forge-master
  3. Select “Appraise” on each old LI — this converts them to Ancient Script and Traceries based on their current level and upgrades

You cannot progress old-style LIs any further. Appraisal is the only path forward.

Classes That Use Legendary Items

All of the following classes use Legendary Items at level 45+: Beorning, Brawler, Burglar, Captain, Champion, Guardian, Hunter, Lore-master, Mariner, Minstrel, Rune-keeper, and Warden.

Each class has unique LI types and Tracery selections tuned to their specific skills. Your class determines which Words of Mastery are available to you.

Quick Start Tips

  1. Complete Vol. II, Book 1, Chapter 9 as soon as you hit level 45 for your first LI
  2. Visit a Forge-master every 5–10 levels to keep your LI Item Level current
  3. Stock Cracked Traceries from questing before visiting the Tracery vendor
  4. Don’t exceed the 10,000 Ancient Script cap — spend before you earn more
  5. Always unslot Traceries before replacing them if you want to reuse them
