Champions Online Nemesis System Guide
One of Champions Online’s most unique features is the Nemesis system — a mechanic that lets you design your own personal arch-villain who becomes a recurring antagonist in your hero’s story. Your Nemesis isn’t just cosmetic; they actively interfere with your missions, lead their own criminal organisation, and provide dedicated quest rewards.
Unlocking the Nemesis System
The Nemesis system becomes available at level 25. At that level, you receive the “Create a Nemesis” quest from the PRIMUS Database terminal in the Millennium City crisis center.
To create your Nemesis, visit the PRIMUS Database and use the Nemesis Creation Interface.
Building Your Nemesis
The Nemesis creation interface lets you customise your villain in several ways:
Appearance
You use the same character creator that builds your hero to design your Nemesis. You can make them look like anything — a rival superhuman, a mechanised robot, a demonic entity, a corporate villain in a suit, or any other design you choose. There are no gameplay restrictions based on appearance.
Power Set
Choose from a list of villain power sets that determine how your Nemesis fights when you encounter them. Options include power sets like:
- Electricity
- Fire / Pyrokinesis
- Ice
- Gadgets and Munitions
- Darkness / Shadows
- Martial Arts
- Telepathy
The power set you choose affects which abilities your Nemesis uses during fights but doesn’t change the rewards you receive.
Villainous Organisation
Choose what type of criminal organisation your Nemesis runs. This determines the minion type that follows them and ambushes you throughout the game:
- Robots and Drones — Mechanical minions
- Supernatural Undead — Ghostly or zombified followers
- Criminals / Street Gangs — Human mobster types
- Mercenaries — Trained soldier types
- Mutants — Powered human followers
- Aliens — Extraterrestrial minions
- Mystical Cultists — Magic-using servants
Your chosen minion type appears in nemesis encounters and dedicated nemesis content.
How the Nemesis Interacts With You
Once created, your Nemesis becomes an active element of your game world in several ways:
Nemesis Ambushes
During regular missions throughout the open world, you’ll occasionally be ambushed by your Nemesis’s minions. A group of their followers attacks you, trying to complete whatever plan your Nemesis is executing. Defeating them drops Nemesis Clue items.
Nemesis Clues and Confrontations
Collecting Nemesis Clues (dropped from ambushes) builds toward Nemesis Lairs — special instanced missions where you directly confront your Nemesis.
When enough clues are collected, you receive a mission to enter your Nemesis’s lair and face them directly. These lair missions tell a short story about your Nemesis’s current scheme and culminate in a boss fight against them.
Nemesis Defeat and Replacement
When you defeat your Nemesis in their lair, they’re imprisoned. You can then create a new Nemesis to replace them, starting the cycle again with a fresh villain design. Many players create several Nemeses over their character’s lifespan.
Defeated Nemeses can still be encountered in specific endgame content even after being “imprisoned.”
Nemesis Rewards
Nemesis content provides:
- Recognition currency (earned from nemesis missions) for purchasing gear
- Gear drops from Nemesis lair bosses
- Achievement points for completing specific Nemesis milestones
- Titles for players who defeat multiple Nemeses
The gear from Nemesis content is competitive at the level you complete it and provides a good progression step between story zones.
Tips for Your Nemesis
- Choose a power set you find fun to fight — you’ll encounter them frequently
- Match the aesthetic to your hero — a gadget-based hero vs. a gadget villain creates a fun personal narrative
- Collect clues consistently — don’t ignore ambushes; they build toward the most rewarding content
- Create a new Nemesis after defeating one — the system is designed for multiple cycles
- Your Nemesis can appear in group content — some alerts and dungeons include optional Nemesis encounters
The Nemesis System in Supergroup Play
While the Nemesis system is primarily a solo-character feature, teammates may occasionally encounter each other’s Nemeses during group play when specific conditions are met. This creates fun cross-character storytelling moments.
Champions Online’s Nemesis system is one of the most creative features in any superhero MMO and remains one of the game’s standout mechanics even years after release.
