Champions Online Free Form Build Guide
Champions Online’s defining feature is the Free Form character build system. Instead of being locked to a class or archetype, Free Form characters can pick any power from any power framework in the game, mixing and matching abilities to create genuinely unique superheroes. This guide explains how Free Form works, how to build effectively, and what to watch out for as a new builder.
Free Form vs. Archetypes
Champions Online offers two ways to build a character:
| Option | How It Works |
|---|---|
| Archetype | Pre-made class template; fixed power choices; recommended for complete newcomers |
| Free Form | Fully customisable; pick any powers from any framework |
Free Form is available to Silver (free-to-play) accounts only if they purchased a lifetime subscription or specific unlock packs. Otherwise, Free Form is a Gold subscriber (all-access subscription) exclusive.
Archetypes are fully free and are the recommended starting point. Once you understand the game’s systems, a Free Form character lets you optimise far more precisely.
Power Frameworks
Powers in Champions Online are grouped into Frameworks — thematic sets that represent different superhero concepts. You can take powers from multiple frameworks on a single Free Form character.
| Framework | Theme |
|---|---|
| Might | Super strength, brawling |
| Electricity | Chain lightning, energy arcs |
| Fire | Flames, burning attacks |
| Ice | Freezing attacks, slows |
| Darkness | Shadow damage, life drain |
| Gadgeteering | Devices, turrets, grenades |
| Munitions | Guns, explosives |
| Martial Arts | Melee combos, fighting techniques |
| Telepathy | Mental attacks, crowd control |
| Archery | Bow-based ranged attacks |
| Power Armor | Mechanised armour abilities |
| Telekinesis | Object manipulation, push/pull |
| Sorcery | Magical abilities |
| Bestial Martial Arts | Animal-powered close combat |
| Hardsuit | Defensive suit abilities |
| Celestial | Holy healing and support |
| Earth | Seismic attacks, summoning boulders |
Building Your Character: Core Concepts
Energy Builders
Every character needs an Energy Builder — a special ability (usually on your left-click/primary slot) that generates energy when used. Energy is your resource for all other powers.
You must pick an Energy Builder from the same framework as one of your primary attacks, or from a compatible set. Without it, you’ll run dry after a few abilities.
Role Selection
When entering combat, characters choose a Combat Role:
- DPS (Damage) — Maximum damage output
- Tank (Protector) — Increased defences, generates more threat
- Healer (Support) — Boosts healing abilities, enables support skills
- Crowd Control — Enhances CC ability duration
Your role can be switched at any time out of combat. Your power selection should support the role you plan to play.
Three Key Stats
| Stat | Effect |
|---|---|
| Constitution | Increases maximum health |
| Recovery | Improves energy regeneration |
| Your Specialisation Stat | Depends on your chosen powers |
Each power framework benefits primarily from a specific stat:
- Might/Melee → Strength
- Magic/Energy → Intelligence or Presence
- Defense → Constitution
- Healing → Presence
Super stat your primary attack stat first, then Constitution for survivability.
Example Builds for Beginners
Energy Melee / Might Build
- Energy Builder: Thunderclap or Strike (Might framework)
- Primary Attack: Haymaker (high single-target punch)
- Area Attack: Shockwave (AoE knockback)
- Defense: Invulnerability or Defiance
- Utility: Mighty Leap (movement)
- Super Stats: Strength → Constitution → Endurance
This is a simple melee brawler. High damage, straightforward to play, good survivability.
Archery Ranged Build
- Energy Builder: Snap Shot
- Primary Attack: Explosive Arrow or Aimed Shot
- Area Attack: Rain of Arrows
- Utility: Evasive Maneuvers (dodge)
- Defense: Regeneration
- Super Stats: Dexterity → Intelligence
Clean ranged attacker with good single-target and AoE. Higher skill ceiling due to combo timing.
Common Mistakes in Free Form Builds
- Taking abilities from too many frameworks — Powers don’t synergise if drawn randomly from 5+ different sets
- Skipping an Energy Builder — Running out of energy mid-fight is fatal
- Ignoring Constitution — A Free Form build with no defence investment dies in seconds
- Not reading power descriptions — Some powers have mechanics (charges, maintained, etc.) that fundamentally change how you play them
- Ignoring Passive Defences — Always slot one passive defense ability (Invulnerability, Regeneration, or Energy Shield)
Testing Your Build
Before committing to a build, use the Powerhouse — a training area in Millennium City that lets you test powers on dummies with no consequences. The Powerhouse is free to use and lets you practice any combination before locking in.
You can respec your powers using Retcon — available for in-game gold or Questionite. Retcons are not free but are affordable enough that experimenting is encouraged.
Resources for Build Theory
The Champions Online community maintains build guides on forums (the official forums and Reddit’s r/co_champions). The Cryptic Studios forums have archived build threads that are still relevant because the core Free Form system hasn’t changed fundamentally in years.
