Brighter Shores — the old-school MMORPG from RuneScape creator Andrew Gower — has moved well past its rocky Early Access launch, and most profession guides online are still from November 2024, written for a game that has since added zones, professions, and its full launch structure. This guide covers the profession system as it works now: how per-zone leveling works, where Knowledge Points fit, and the money-making loops that still carry new players.

How Professions Work in Brighter Shores

Professions are Brighter Shores’ skill system, and they work differently from most MMOs:

  • Each zone has its own version of every profession. Your Fisher level in Hopeport is separate from your Fisher level in Hopeforest. Unlocking a new episode unlocks a new set of professions.
  • Knowledge Points are earned as you level and let you invest in passive improvements to specific professions — these decisions are semi-permanent, so spend them on the professions you actually grind.
  • Total Level (the sum of everything) gates certain content — some tutorial milestones require a total level of 60 before you can progress.
  • Passive XP accrues while you’re offline for activities you’ve set up, making Brighter Shores one of the best MMOs for players who can’t grind actively.

The per-zone system is the core strategic decision: every profession level earned in one zone doesn’t transfer. Pick one zone per profession and stick with it — your Knowledge Point investments should target the zone you actually play.

The Starting Loop: Hopeport

Hopeport is where everyone starts, and its profession loop teaches the whole game:

Guard (Combat)

Combat is turn-based, and defeats restore you to full health — you can’t lose progress to a death spiral. Enemies drop equipment you can sell and award Guard XP. The tutorial fights against goblins walk you through it, and the Guard profession’s questline (including The Obelisk, which pays over 10,000 Guard experience) unlocks equipment Tuning for the zone.

Fisher

  • Buy the Fishing Spear from Melv’s Fishing Supplies (12 silver).
  • Start with Mottled Flounder on the East Beach, then graduate to Lesser Eels at Eel Street Bridge.
  • Sell your catch at The Frequently Fresh Fish Stall south of the bridge.

Fish unlock by level: Lesser Eel (2), Sandy Pufferfish (4), Olive Flounder (6), Gray Eel (8), Lonely Pufferfish (10), Stone Flounder (12), Yellowtail Gurnard (14), and onward — with species tied to specific locations like the West Waterfront (Lobster), Seashells Seashore (Bass), Starfish Point (Cod), Ray Bay (Ray), and Pirate Hideout (Gurnard).

Chef

The money loop starts here:

  1. Buy ingredients from Kevin’s Ingredient Merchant outside The Delectable Dab restaurant.
  2. Cook Basic Bacon Sandwiches — ingredients cost 400 copper, the Head Chef pays 560 copper each. That’s a 160-copper margin per sandwich, repeatable.
  3. At Chef level 2, unlock Lesser Jellied Eels — caught free at Eel Street Bridge, Gelatin costs 200 copper from Kevin, the Head Chef pays 556 copper each.
  4. At Chef level 9, unlock Chef’s Bounties — NPC delivery requests that pay significantly more than selling to the Head Chef, and you can stack several at once to batch your trips.

Forager and Alchemist

The tutorial’s Brown Kelp gathering on East Beach introduces Forager, and the Apothecary quest introduces Alchemist. This pairing is the community-recommended secondary focus: Forager gathers ingredients, Alchemist turns them into potions, and spare potions sell to Ebsworth at the Apothecary for steady income. Potions also fuel your combat grinding, so the loop feeds itself.

The Money-Making Methods, Ranked

For new players in the current version:

  1. Chef’s Bounties (level 9+) — the best active income once unlocked; stack multiple bounties per trip.
  2. Bacon Sandwich / Jellied Eel cooking loop — reliable margins while leveling Chef, before bounties unlock.
  3. Selling fish — everything from Mottled Flounder (150+ copper) upward sells at the fish stall; it’s income while training.
  4. Selling unused equipment to the Quartermaster — combat drops you’d otherwise discard become copper piles.
  5. Selling potions to Ebsworth — the Alchemist byproduct loop.
  6. Looting chests — Barracks chests at the Training Grounds pay 60–400 copper and reset when you leave the Barracks. Use the Sense spell (eye icon) to highlight interactables in any new area.

Currency comes in copper, silver, and beyond — most early income is copper, and the jump to silver comes from bounties and higher-tier professions.

Knowledge Points: Where to Spend

Knowledge Points are the long game. Priorities:

  1. XP-boosting nodes for your main profession loop — Chef, Fisher, and Guard are the Hopeport trinity.
  2. Anything that speeds the cooking/ingredient loop — it’s the backbone of early money.
  3. Avoid spreading points across professions you don’t actively train; the per-zone structure already fragments your progress.

Tuning and Premium Pass Notes

  • Equipment Tuning binds gear to a zone — tuned gear can’t be re-tuned for another zone, so you eventually need one set per zone.
  • The Premium Pass unlocks the Mine of Mantuban (third zone) and Crenopolis (fourth zone) plus name perks. Free players progress meaningfully through the first two zones; the pass is worth it only once you’ve exhausted them.

Why Now Is a Good Time

The November 2024 guide wave is outdated, and players returning for the final launch era are finding a bigger, rebalanced game with more episodes’ worth of professions. The systems above are the fundamentals that haven’t changed — the per-zone structure, the cooking margin loop, and the bounty system remain the backbone of efficient play.

For the genre’s other classic, our OSRS money making guide covers Gower’s original phenomenon, and the RuneScape 3 Necromancy training guide covers RS3’s modern era.
