ARK Survival Ascended Beginner Guide 2026
ARK: Survival Ascended is the Unreal Engine 5 remake of the dinosaur survival MMO. You wake up naked on a beach surrounded by dinosaurs. Here is how to survive day one.
First hour: Punch trees for wood and thatch. Craft a Pickaxe and Hatchet. Gather stone and flint. Craft a Spear for defence. Kill Dodos for meat and hide. Build a small thatch hut before nightfall.
First tame: Parasaur (easy knockout with fists or club, feed berries). Gives mobility and carry weight. Second tame: Pteranodon (flyer, unlocks the entire map). Use bolas to immobilise, tranq arrows to knock out, feed raw meat.
Progression: Thatch → Wood → Stone → Metal structures. Each tier is exponentially stronger. Move inland as you gear up — better resources, more dangerous predators. Join a tribe for shared XP and defence.
Note: Verified as of July 2026. Check official patch notes for updates.

Best Early Tames
| Level | Creature | Use | Taming Method |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-10 | Dodo | Eggs, hide | Punch or club |
| 10-30 | Parasaur | Transport, berries | Bola + club/tranq arrows |
| 30-50 | Pteranodon | Flying scout | Bola + tranq arrows, feed raw meat |
| 50-70 | Argentavis | Heavy transport, metal runs | Tranq arrows, build trap |
| 70+ | Rex | Boss fights, meat farming | Large bear trap + tranq darts |
Always build a taming pen before attempting anything larger than a Parasaur. A 2x2 stone foundation with doorframes as walls works for most mid-game creatures. Bring extra narcotics — bigger creatures wake up fast.
Recommended Progression Path
- Build a thatch hut on the beach (day 1)
- Tame a Parasaur for mobility (day 1-2)
- Upgrade to a wooden base inland (day 3-4)
- Tame a Pteranodon to unlock the full map (day 4-5)
- Tame an Argentavis for metal transport — this unlocks industrial-tier crafting (day 5-7)
- Build a stone base in a defensible location (week 2)
- Start breeding for boss fights (week 3+)
Join a tribe as early as possible. Shared XP, shared tames, and tribe-wide engrams multiply your progression speed by 3-5x.
