What the planner actually tells you
The enchanting table is three separate lotteries in one block: the slot levels it offers depend on your bookshelves, the modified enchantment level adds two random bonuses on top of the slot you pick, and the enchant itself is drawn from weights — Sharpness at weight 10 beats out Sweeping Edge at weight 2 about five-to-one whenever both are eligible. Running the numbers first tells you whether your target enchant is common, rare, or literally impossible from the table.
Shelves are the first gate: the bottom slot needs roughly twice your shelf count, so a 15-shelf setup is the only way to see level 30. The second gate is XP — enchanting spends levels, and Minecraft levels get expensive fast past 30, so a "3-level" enchant at level 38 costs far more smelting than the same enchant at level 30. The planner converts both directions so you farm the right amount of XP.
Conflicts kill more god-tools than bad luck: Sharpness, Smite and Bane of Arthropods exclude each other, Infinity and Mending never coexist, and Protection variants share one slot. Treasure enchantments — Mending, Frost Walker, Soul Speed, Swift Sneak — never appear in the table at all; the planner flags them immediately so the anvil, villagers and loot become the plan. Differences by edition are small — see our Bedrock vs Java guide if you play both.
Frequently asked questions
How many bookshelves do I need for level 30?
15 bookshelves, one block of air between them and the table. That unlocks the level-30 bottom slot — fewer shelves cap the bottom option at twice your shelf count.
What does enchantment "weight" mean?
After the table rolls a modified enchantment level, it picks one eligible enchant weighted by these numbers — Sharpness (weight 10) is picked roughly ten times as often as Infinity (weight 1) at the same level bracket.
Why can I not get Mending or Frost Walker from the table?
Treasure enchantments only come from loot, fishing, trading or structures. The planner flags them so you stop wasting lapis rolling for the impossible.
How much XP does enchanting actually cost?
Enchanting deducts levels, not XP points — and Minecraft XP is nonlinear. The planner converts the level cost into true XP points so you know how many furnaces of smelted kelp you actually need.
Example: Sharpness V on netherite sword
15 bookshelves, sword, Sharpness V. Result: max slot 30, level cost 3, XP ~30 points, roll share 29.4%. Note: "Max tier Sharpness V typically needs level-30 slot plus luck — grindstone spare rolls back into XP."
