How failstack math really works

Every enhancement attempt in Black Desert starts from a fixed base chance and adds a fixed amount per failstack — boss weapons and armor share one table (TET starts at just 2.00% and gains 0.20% per stack), accessories share another with much richer bases (TRI starts at 7.5%). Two limiters keep the numbers honest: accessory rates collapse past their soft caps, and nothing unsafe can ever exceed 90%.

The expensive mistake is over-stacking: each stack you burn on an attempt is a stack you cannot use elsewhere, and past the recommended band (40–90 for TET, 60+ for PEN boss gear) the extra chance per stack costs more than the attempt is worth. Under-stacking is the mirror mistake — tapping PEN on a 20-stack is donating silver. The calculator places your stack on that curve and tells you which side you're on, plus the expected number of attempts so you can budget stones and crons.

Rates here cover blue and yellow grade gear — green gear, Tuvala, Blackstar and Godr-Ayed weapons run different tables, and cron-stone protection changes the economics (not the chance). For gearing context see our Dosa awakening combos and Fallen God crafting guides.

Frequently asked questions

What failstack should I use for TET boss gear?

Community guidance says 40 or more failstacks for TET, capped around 90 — beyond that each stack adds so little chance that the stack itself is worth more than the attempt. For PEN, start at 60+.

Is there a maximum success chance?

Yes — 90% is the hard cap for unsafe enhancement. No stack can push past it, which is why the calculator flags over-stacked attempts as wasted.

Why do accessories have soft caps?

Accessory enhancement rates drop sharply past the soft cap (e.g. TRI drops from +0.75% to +0.15% per stack after 44 stacks). The calculator applies the post-softcap rate automatically.

Are these the official rates?

Base chances and per-stack gains match the officially revealed 2019 enhancement table for blue/yellow grade gear, still current per 2026 community guides. Rates differ for green gear, Tuvala and Blackstar — this tool covers boss-grade gear.

Example: TET failstack check

Boss gear, TET, 50 stacks. Result: success 12.00%, avg 8.3 attempts. Verdict: "50 stacks is under the advised 50+ for TET — build the stack up first." Sweet spot is 50–100 stacks.
