Core Hunting Fundamentals
1. Learn the Monster
Every monster has:
- Telegraphs (wind-up animations before attacks)
- Weak points (head, tail, belly)
- Elemental weaknesses (fire, ice, thunder, dragon, water)
- Breakable parts (horns, tails, wings)
The golden rule: Watch the monster, don’t just attack. Learn its patterns, then punish openings.
2. Positioning
- Stay mobile — don’t stand still and trade hits
- Attack the head — most damage (but most danger)
- Cut the tail — tail cuts drop rare materials
- Avoid the front — most monsters attack forward
3. Sharpness & Affinity
- Sharpness — weapon sharpness drops as you fight. Sharpen when it drops a color.
- Affinity — critical hit chance. Higher = more crits.
Armor & Progression
Early Game Progression
| Rank | Focus |
|---|---|
| Low Rank (LR) | Learn weapons, craft basic armor |
| High Rank (HR) | Craft better armor, learn monster patterns |
| Master Rank (MR) | Endgame, optimize builds |
Armor Skills
Armor pieces grant skills. Key offensive skills:
- Attack Boost — flat damage increase
- Weakness Exploit — +crit on weak points
- Critical Eye — +affinity
- Agitator — +damage when monster is enraged
Defensive Skills (for beginners)
- Health Boost — more HP (best defensive skill)
- Divine Blessing — chance to reduce damage
- Evade Window — more i-frames on dodge
Hunting Loop
The Core Loop
- Accept a hunt (quest board)
- Track the monster
- Fight the monster (break parts, exploit weaknesses)
- Capture or kill the monster
- Carve materials
- Craft/upgrade gear
- Repeat with harder monsters
Capturing vs Killing
- Capturing (trap + tranq when limping) = more rewards, faster
- Killing = carving specific materials
Learn to capture. It’s faster and gives better rewards. Place a trap when the monster is limping (skull icon on map), then tranq bomb it.
Essential Tips
- Eat before every hunt — food buffs are essential
- Bring traps and tranq bombs — capturing saves time
- Use the map — scoutflies track the monster
- Break the tail — many rare materials come from tail cuts
- Play co-op — hunting with friends is easier and more fun
- Don’t be greedy — one extra hit isn’t worth a cart
Monster Hunter Wilds is a game about learning. Every hunt teaches you something about the monster, your weapon, or yourself. Pick a weapon you enjoy, learn monster patterns, and the progression comes naturally.
