ESO: Winterhold Companion Unlock Guide (2025 Chapter)

The release of the new The Elder Scrolls Online chapter has finally brought companions to the northern reaches of Skyrim. The most requested addition is the sturdy Nord tank, Bjornolfr the Unbroken, who hails from the College of Winterhold area.

If you are looking for a reliable tank companion to take the heat off your DPS or Healer builds, here is exactly how to find and recruit him.

Bjornolfr the Unbroken Overview

Role: Tank / Stamina DPS
Race: Nord
Class: Warden-aligned (Ice Magic & Animal Companions)
Personality: Gruff but loyal, hates Daedra and Necromancy.
Passive Perk: Mountain’s Endurance. Reduces damage taken from environmental effects like lava, slaughterfish, and falling by 10% while he is active.

Quest Location: Winterhold

Unlike previous companions found near wayshrines, Bjornolfr is located inside a specific building.

Travel to the Winterhold Wayshrine in Western Skyrim (or the updated zone map if you own the latest chapter).
Enter The Frozen Hearth Inn. This is the main tavern in the city.
Look for Bjornolfr arguing with the innkeeper near the large fireplace. He will have a quest marker above his head.

Unlock Quest: “The Frozen Hearth’s Debt”

To recruit him, you must complete his introductory quest.

Quest Giver: Bjornolfr the Unbroken (Inside The Frozen Hearth Inn).

Objectives:

Talk to the Innkeeper: Learn that Bjornolfr has racked up a significant tab that he cannot pay.
Retrieve “Ice-Wraith Essence”: The innkeeper demands a rare ingredient found in Horker’s Drop delve nearby to clear the debt.
Enter Horker’s Drop Delve: Located just south of Winterhold along the coast. Fight your way to the boss chamber to collect the essence.
Return to the Inn: Hand over the essence. Bjornolfr, grateful for saving his reputation, offers his service to you.

Summoning Bjornolfr

Once the quest is complete:

Open your Collections menu.
Navigate to Allies > Companions.
Select Bjornolfr the Unbroken and set him to active.
