The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) is a massive multiplayer online game set in the Elder Scrolls universe, developed by ZeniMax Online Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. Released in April 2014, ESO has grown into one of the most content-rich MMOs available, featuring a vast open world, deep lore from the Elder Scrolls series, and flexible character building with no fixed classes. The game runs on PC, Mac, PlayStation, and Xbox.

Getting Started

After downloading and creating your account, you’ll begin with the Prologue questline, which introduces you to the Daedric Prince Mehrunes Dagon and the Three Banners War. This short questline teaches basic movement, combat, and the game’s systems.

After the prologue, you’ll choose your Alliance and begin in one of three starting zones:

Alliances

  • Daggerfall Covenant (Blue) — Bretons, Orcs, and Redguards. Starts in Glenumbra, Stros M’Kai, or Betnikh.
  • Aldmeri Dominion (Yellow) — High Elves, Wood Elves, and Khajiit. Starts in Auridon, Khenarthi’s Roost, or Velyn Harbor.
  • Ebonheart Pact (Red) — Nords, Dark Elves, and Argonians. Starts in Stonefalls, Bleakrock Isle, or Bal Foyen.

Your alliance determines your starting zone and PvP allegiance in Cyrodiil, but you can visit any zone and play with anyone regardless of alliance.

Choosing Your Class

ESO features 6 classes, each with unique skill lines. Unlike most MMOs, any class can fill any role (tank, DPS, or healer) through skill choices:

Dragonknight

  • Skills: Ardent Flame (DPS), Draconic Power (tank), Earthen Heart (support)
  • Best for: Beginners who want a durable, straightforward class
  • Playstyle: Tank or melee DPS with fire and earth magic

Sorcerer

  • Skills: Dark Magic (crowd control), Daedric Summoning (pets), Storm Calling (lightning DPS)
  • Best for: Players who enjoy summoning pets and ranged magic
  • Playstyle: Magicka DPS with pets, or Stamina DPS with weapons

Nightblade

  • Skills: Assassination (burst damage), Shadow (stealth), Siphoning (healing)
  • Best for: Players who enjoy stealth and burst damage
  • Playstyle: High skill ceiling, rewarding for skilled players

Templar

  • Skills: Aedric Spear (melee DPS), Dawn’s Wrath (AOE), Restoring Light (healing)
  • Best for: Players who want to heal or support their group
  • Playstyle: Healer or DPS with strong self-healing

Warden

  • Skills: Animal Companions (pets), Green Balance (healing), Winter’s Revenge (ice DPS)
  • Best for: Players who want a versatile, nature-themed class
  • Playstyle: Flexible — tank, DPS, or healer

Necromancer

  • Skills: Grave Lord (summons), Bone Tyrant (tank), Living Death (healing)
  • Best for: Players who enjoy summoning undead armies
  • Playstyle: Summoner DPS or tank with corpse mechanics

Beginner recommendation: Dragonknight or Templar — both are durable and straightforward.

The Skill System

ESO’s skill system is one of its most unique features. Instead of fixed classes with predetermined abilities, you build your character from multiple skill lines:

  • Class Skills — 3 skill lines per class (unlock as you level)
  • Weapon Skills — Skills tied to your equipped weapon (Sword, Bow, Staff, etc.)
  • Guild Skills — Skills from joining guilds (Fighters Guild, Mages Guild, Undaunted)
  • World Skills — Universal skills anyone can learn (Lockpicking, Soul Trap, etc.)
  • Racial Skills — Bonuses based on your race

You can have 5 active skills on your bar plus an ultimate ability. Skill points come from leveling up, completing quests, and finding Skyshards (3 shards = 1 skill point).

Champion Points (Post-50 Progression)

After reaching level 50, you begin earning Champion Points (CP) instead of levels. CP provides permanent account-wide bonuses in three constellations:

  • Craft Tree — Exploration, crafting, and utility bonuses
  • Warrior Tree — Physical damage, health, and armor bonuses
  • Mage Tree — Magical damage, Magicka, and resistance bonuses

CP is essential for endgame content. Focus on the Slottable Stars in each constellation that benefit your build first.

Crafting and Trait Research

ESO has 7 crafting professions:

  1. Blacksmithing — Heavy armor and weapons
  2. Clothing — Light and medium armor
  3. Woodworking — Bows, staves, and shields
  4. Alchemy — Potions and poisons
  5. Enchanting — Glyphs for gear
  6. Provisioning — Food and drinks
  7. Jewelry Crafting — Rings and necklaces

Trait Research is critical — it takes real time (days to weeks per trait) and is required to craft gear sets. Start researching traits immediately, even if you don’t plan to craft seriously. Researching the first trait on an item takes ~6 hours, and each additional trait on the same item takes longer.

Making Gold

  • Crafting Writs — Daily crafting quests that reward gold and materials. Complete these every day.
  • Dungeons — Sell gear drops and materials from dungeon runs.
  • Fishing — Catch rare fish for provisioning recipes and sell for profit.
  • Thieves Guild — Steal items and launder them through fences for gold.
  • Trading Guilds — Join a trading guild for access to the marketplace (you can’t trade with other players directly outside guilds).

PvP Content

ESO has three PvP modes:

  • Cyrodiil — Large-scale Alliance War with 3 alliances fighting for territory. Capture keeps, resources, and siege gates.
  • Imperial City — PvPvE zone inside Cyrodiil. Fight other players while completing objectives and farming for gear.
  • Battlegrounds — 4v4v4 small-scale PvP matches with various objectives (Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, etc.).

PvP is optional but provides unique gear sets and achievements.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Ignoring Trait Research — It takes real time to research traits. Start immediately, even if you don’t craft.
  2. Not Joining a Trading Guild — You can’t use the marketplace without a trading guild.
  3. Skipping the Main Story — It provides essential skill points and CP.
  4. Neglecting Mount Speed — Upgrade mount speed at a stable master every day. It takes 180 days to max.
  5. Worrying About Builds — Learn the game first. You can respec skills and attributes easily.

Final Tips

  • Complete the Main Story — It provides skill points, CP, and unlocks zone故事.
  • Join a Trading Guild — Access to the marketplace is crucial for progression.
  • Start Researching Traits Now — It takes real time and is essential for crafting.
  • Upgrade Mount Speed — Do this every day at any stable master.
  • Explore Freely — The world is designed for discovery. Explore every cave, delve, and public dungeon.
