Recruitment — Who to Hire
Build reputation in villages by completing quests, trading, and donating. Higher reputation unlocks better followers. Each follower has hidden stats that determine their efficiency.
| Profession | Best Stat | Recruit From | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lumberjack | Strength | Forest villages (Brenwood, Oakheart) | High — wood fuels everything |
| Miner | Strength | Mountain settlements | High — ore for weapons and tools |
| Hunter | Agility | Hunting camps | Medium — meat, hide, leather |
| Farmer | Constitution | Farming villages | Medium — food sustainability |
| Smith | Intelligence | Town smithies | Low initially — you can craft early-game items yourself |
Target 3-5 followers in your first 5 hours. Two lumberjacks, one miner, one farmer, and one hunter is the optimal starting composition. Hire Smiths after you have a steady resource income.
Job Assignment Efficiency
Each follower can be assigned to one workstation. Specialists outperform generalists:
- A Lumberjack with 15 Strength produces ~40 logs/hour
- A generic follower with 8 Strength produces ~18 logs/hour
- Two specialized Lumberjacks (80 logs/hr) can supply a small sawmill indefinitely
Do NOT assign followers to multiple jobs. A Lumberjack who also farms is a bad Lumberjack and a worse farmer. Each follower should have exactly one primary job.
Early-game job priority:
- Lumberjack → fuelling sawmill, building materials
- Miner → stone for upgrades, ore for tools
- Farmer → food supply. 2 farmers can feed 8+ followers once fields are established.
- Hunter → meat and hide for leather armour upgrades
- Smith → only after stable wood/ore income. Assign your highest-Intelligence follower here.
Combat Formations and Gear
Followers fight alongside you during bandit raids and sieges. Equip them with gear matching their combat role:
| Combat Role | Weapon | Armour | Best Stat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frontline (2-3) | Spear or Sword | Heavy armour | Strength, Constitution |
| Archers (1-2) | Bow or Crossbow | Medium armour | Agility |
| Medic (1) | Mace (for stuns) | Light armour | Intelligence |
Use the Follow Me command to position your frontline between enemies and your archers. Assign archers to elevated positions. Do not send followers into combat without armour — naked followers die in 2-3 hits from bandit leaders.
Follower Upkeep and Happiness
Followers consume food daily. A hungry follower works at 50% efficiency and may leave. Keep 3+ days of food in storage at all times. Build a Tavern (mid-game building) to boost follower happiness, which increases work speed by 10-25%.
Summary
Hire 3-5 followers early (2 lumberjack, 1 miner, 1 farmer, 1 hunter). Assign exactly one job per follower. Equip combat followers before raids. Keep food stocked. Build a Tavern for efficiency bonuses. Happy, specialised followers multiply your production by 5-10x.
