Wizard101 Fishing Guide
Fishing in Wizard101 is a relaxing side activity introduced as part of the Spring Update that lets you cast spells to catch fish in ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water across the Spiral. Fish can be used for reagents, sold for gold, added to your home aquarium, or turned in for rewards. It’s one of the few activities that doesn’t require combat and can be done at your own pace.
How to Start Fishing
Fishing becomes available at level 7 or higher. To begin:
- Talk to Zan’ne in the Commons (Wizard City) — he gives you the introductory fishing quest
- Complete the quest to receive your first fishing spell
- Equip the fishing spell in your hotbar (accessed through the Fishing spell interface, not your regular spell deck)
- Find a fishing location — most water bodies in Wizard City and beyond support fishing
Fishing spells are not the same as combat spells. They have their own deck system.
Fishing Energy
Fishing consumes Energy, a separate resource from Mana. Your Energy pool refills over time (regenerating roughly 1 point every 2–3 minutes). You also have a base Energy cap that can be increased through:
- Gear with Energy bonuses (found from level 7 forward)
- Pet talents that increase max Energy
- Elixirs sold in the Crown Shop
Most players fish in bursts, deplete their Energy, do other activities, then return to fish again.
Fishing Spells
Fishing spells are learned from Zan’ne and other fishing trainers found in different worlds. There are three main types:
| Spell Type | Effect |
|---|---|
| Lure Spells | Attract fish; required for all fishing |
| Reveal Fish | Shows the school of all nearby fish (only compatible fish react to your lure) |
| Catch All | Catches all fish within a radius at once |
Reveal Fish Spell
The Reveal Fish spell is especially important. When cast, it shows the school icon above every fish in the current area. This lets you see whether a fish you want is present before spending Energy on lures.
School-Specific Lures
Each fishing spell targets specific schools of fish (Fire fish, Ice fish, Storm fish, etc.). Using the wrong school lure will not attract fish of a different school. Match your lure to the fish you want.
Fish Schools and Types
Fish in Wizard101 belong to the same schools as magic (Fire, Ice, Storm, Myth, Life, Death, Balance). The fish you catch depends on:
- Which lure spell school you use
- The location you fish in (different zones have different fish populations)
- Reagent availability in that world’s water
Some fish are common; others are rare and require multiple attempts to catch.
What Fish Are Used For
Reagents
Many fish drop reagents when released or used. These are standard crafting reagents (like Fish Fin, Fish Oil, etc.) used in various recipes. Fishing is sometimes the best way to farm specific reagents that don’t drop from enemies.
Home Aquarium
You can place caught fish in your Home Aquarium (a housing decoration available from Housing vendors or the Crown Shop). Living fish swimming in your aquarium is a popular decorating feature.
Gold
All fish can be sold for gold. Rare and larger fish sell for more. If you don’t need a specific fish for crafting or your aquarium, selling is a fine option.
Fishing Tournaments
Periodic fishing tournaments allow you to compete against other wizards for the biggest catch. Prizes include rare housing items and cosmetics.
Best Fishing Locations
Each world has at least one fishing location, with more becoming available in later worlds. Notable spots:
- Wizard City (The Commons, Cyclops Lane) — Easy starter fish; Fire and Ice fish plentiful
- Krokotopia — Balance and Myth fish available
- Marleybone — Storm fish in the docks areas
- Mooshu — Life fish common in garden areas
- Celestia — Rare fish with unique reagent drops
- Aquila — High-level fish; worth visiting after unlocking
Higher-world fish tend to drop better reagents and are worth more.
Catching Rare Fish
Rare fish appear less frequently in the spawn pool. To catch rare fish:
- Use Reveal Fish to check if a rare fish is currently spawning
- If not visible, leave the area briefly and return (fish respawn when you reload the zone)
- Use the correct school lure when the rare fish appears
- Make sure your Energy is sufficient for multiple attempts
Some rare fish have very low spawn rates. Catching them may take many zone resets.
Fishing Tips
- Always carry Reveal Fish — it saves Energy by confirming fish presence before casting
- Invest in Energy gear starting at level 7 — more Energy means longer fishing sessions
- Fish in the world appropriate to your level — higher world fish drop better reagents
- Use the correct lure school — you won’t catch Fire fish with an Ice lure
- Fill your aquarium — fish in your house display well and give your home personality
- Check recipe lists first — if you need specific reagents, identify which fish drop them and target those zones
