RS3 Necromancy Talent Tree Guide
The Necromancy talent tree is how you unlock the skill’s most powerful abilities and incantations. Unlocking talents costs talent points earned from combat experience — rituals alone do not generate talent points. Souls in the Well of Souls are spent to open each tier, while talent points are spent to buy individual talents within that tier.
Understanding the talent tree before you start saves you from being stuck at a tier boundary waiting for a quest you didn’t know was required.
How Talent Points Work
Talent points come from Necromancy combat experience only. You cannot earn points from rituals or skilling. Each point unlocks one talent in the tree. All talents on a tier are available once that tier is unlocked, but some talents require the previous version to be purchased first (for example, Spectral Scythe Upgrade 1 requires the base Spectral Scythe talent first).
Important: Once you purchase a talent, you cannot undo it. Eventually, with enough combat experience, you can unlock every single talent — but the order you pick matters during mid-level progression.
Tier Unlock Requirements
| Tier | Necromancy Level | Souls Required | Additional Requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | 1 | — |
| 2 | 20 | 50 | — |
| 3 | 40 | 400 | Rune Mythos quest |
| 4 | 60 | 2,000 | — |
| 5 | 70 | 4,500 | — |
| 6 | 80 | 8,500 | — |
| 7 | 90 | 35,000 | — |
You acquire souls by performing Communion rituals at the Um ritual site. Greater and Powerful Communion rituals give far more souls per ritual than Lesser Communion, so push your ritual level alongside your combat level to avoid soul-gating.
What Each Tier Unlocks
Tier 1 (Level 1, 1 Soul)
- Conjure Skeleton Warrior — Your first conjurable spirit. Requires 2 Necromancy to actually use. The Skeleton Warrior attacks your target and builds Rage stacks that increase damage by 3% per stack.
Priority: Unlock immediately. It’s your only option here.
Tier 2 (Level 20, 50 Souls)
- Command Skeleton Warrior — Activates the Warrior’s inner rage for a burst of rapid attacks over 6 seconds. Requires purchasing Conjure Skeleton Warrior first.
Priority: Unlock this. It substantially increases the Warrior’s burst damage output.
Tier 3 (Level 40, 400 Souls + Rune Mythos Quest)
Choose from three options in this tier:
- Conjure Vengeful Ghost — Summons a ghost that haunts enemies. The ghost applies a debuff that causes targets to take up to 10% bonus damage from all attacks (capped at 20% of your Necromancy damage).
- Threads of Fate incantation (requires level 44 Necromancy to cast) — Links up to 4 additional nearby enemies to share your single-target attacks.
- Conjure Putrid Zombie — Summons a zombie that poisons nearby enemies for 8–12% damage every 1.8 seconds.
Priority: Conjure Vengeful Ghost is most useful for slayer and bossing because the Haunted debuff applies to everyone in your group, not just your own attacks. Putrid Zombie is good for AoE content. Pick based on your intended use.
Tier 4 (Level 60, 2,000 Souls)
Multiple options:
- Command Vengeful Ghost — Applies Haunted to the target (takes up to 10% bonus damage for 4.8 seconds).
- Spectral Scythe (requires level 62 Necromancy) — AoE cone ability, first hit of a 3-hit combo.
- Spirit Pact I — Passive: spirits deal increased damage.
- Command Putrid Zombie — Makes the zombie explode for AoE damage.
Priority: Spirit Pact I is passive and always active. Spectral Scythe adds AoE capability, especially useful in multi-target situations. Command Vengeful Ghost matters more in group content.
Tier 5 (Level 70, 4,500 Souls)
- Greater Bone Shield incantation (requires level 73 Necromancy and Tomes of the Warlock quest) — Bone Shield at 50% Necromancy level instead of 25%.
- Spectral Scythe Upgrade 1 — Enables the second hit of the Spectral Scythe combo (spin AoE).
- Conjure Phantom Guardian — Defensive spirit that reduces incoming damage and generates Valour stacks.
- Spirit Pact II — Further increases spirit damage.
- Life Transfer incantation (level 76 Necromancy + Tomes of the Warlock) — Damages yourself to extend active spirit durations by 21 seconds.
Priority: Spirit Pact II is the most universally useful passive. Phantom Guardian is excellent for tanking or anything where you take sustained hits. Greater Bone Shield is useful for budget defensive setups.
Tier 6 (Level 80, 8,500 Souls)
- Darkness incantation (level 86 Necromancy + Tomes of the Warlock) — 20% chance to dodge incoming attacks for 12 minutes.
- Spectral Scythe Upgrade 2 — Enables the third hit of the Spectral Scythe combo (downward AoE smash that deals increased damage based on enemy missing health).
- Command Phantom Guardian — Makes the Guardian blast enemies with its shield; damage scales with Valour stacks (up to 300% with 25 stacks).
- Spirit Pact III — Final tier of spirit damage passive.
- Invoke Death incantation (level 80 Necromancy) — Your next Necromancy attack applies Death Mark; if the target drops below 20% HP, the mark executes them (capped at 30,000 damage).
Priority: Spirit Pact III first (free permanent bonus). Command Phantom Guardian matters if you’re using the Guardian. Invoke Death is powerful for burst situations and high-HP bosses.
Tier 7 (Level 90, 35,000 Souls)
- Split Soul incantation (requires The Temple at Senntisten quest + 92 Necromancy) — For 20.4 seconds, Soul Split curse damage is redirected to your target instead of healing you.
- Conjure Undead Army (requires 99 Necromancy) — Casts up to four conjure abilities at once, consuming 2 Ectoplasm each.
Priority: Split Soul is exceptional for sustained DPS when combined with Soul Split. Conjure Undead Army requires level 99 to cast but is a very powerful opener.
Talent Priority Summary
For a player focused on general use and slayer, the recommended unlock order is:
- Tier 1: Conjure Skeleton Warrior
- Tier 2: Command Skeleton Warrior
- Tier 3: Conjure Vengeful Ghost
- Tier 4: Spirit Pact I → Command Vengeful Ghost
- Tier 5: Spirit Pact II → Conjure Phantom Guardian
- Tier 6: Spirit Pact III → Command Phantom Guardian
- Tier 7: Split Soul → Conjure Undead Army (when level 99)
Filling the Well of Souls Faster
The Well of Souls progression bottleneck is hardest at tier 7, which requires 35,000 souls. Focus on Powerful Communion rituals once you hit level 90 Necromancy:
- Powerful Memento rituals give 75 souls per ritual (base), up to 291 with full Multiply setup.
- Frost Dragon Bones give 40 souls per ritual, widely available on the Grand Exchange.
- Reinforced Dragon Bones give 50 souls per ritual.
- Robust Memento gives 60 souls per ritual.
With maximum Multiply glyphs active and an alteration necklace, you can generate 291 souls per Powerful Communion ritual (using Powerful Mementos), making the 35,000 soul requirement achievable with around 120 rituals.
