EQ2 Signature Quest Guide
Signature Quests are EverQuest 2’s major story quest chains — long, multi-part narratives that serve as the main storyline for each expansion. Unlike standard side quests, Signature Quest chains are tracked separately in your journal, have a specific start point, and often reward high-quality gear, prestige abilities, and unique titles when completed.
What Makes a Signature Quest Different?
Standard quests are standalone — complete one, move on. Signature Quests are different because:
- They span 10–30+ individual quests connected in a single long chain
- They tell the expansion’s primary narrative arc
- They’re marked with a feather icon in your quest journal
- They often gate access to new zones or features
- Their rewards are significantly above what random quests provide
Think of Signature Quests as EQ2’s equivalent of a main campaign questline in a single-player RPG.
How to Start a Signature Quest
Each expansion or content tier has one or more Signature Quest chains. They typically start from:
- An NPC in the main hub of the new expansion zone
- A letter delivered to your mailbox when you enter the relevant level range
- A quest starter NPC in the main cities (Qeynos or Freeport)
Pay attention to gold/yellow quest markers and feather icons in new zones — these lead to Signature content.
Quest Chain Structure
A typical Signature Quest chain follows this pattern:
- Introduction — A short quest explaining the expansion’s threat
- Exploration phase — Several quests that send you to new zones
- Heroic dungeon quests — At some point, the chain sends you into a group dungeon
- Story revelations — Major narrative beats played out in solo instances
- Finale — Often a solo or group fight against an expansion villain
- Reward — High-quality gear appropriate to the expansion’s tier
The solo instances (often called Heritage Quest instances or signature story instances) are private versions of zones where the story plays out without other players. These are among EQ2’s best storytelling moments.
Rewards from Signature Quests
Signature Quests provide some of the best rewards available without raiding:
| Reward Type | Examples |
|---|---|
| Gear | Often Treasured or Legendary quality, competitive with lower-tier raid drops |
| Prestige Abilities | Unique passive or active abilities unavailable elsewhere |
| Titles | ”The Betrayer”, “Champion of Norrath”, etc. |
| Mount Access | Some chains reward unique mounts |
| Currency | Significant platinum rewards |
| Achievement Points | Achievement completion for chain milestones |
Major Signature Quest Chains by Expansion
EQ2 has had signature content since its early updates, with named quest chains for each major expansion:
- Destiny of Velious — Signature chain involving the continent of Velious and giant/dragon warfare
- Age of Discovery — Tradeskill-heavy chain; involves a Beastlord storyline
- Chains of Eternity — Chain involving the Ethernere realm and the afterlife
- Altar of Malice — Chain set on the Isle of Mara and the malicious corruption story
- Terrors of Thalumbra — Chain set in the dark underdark city of Maldura
- Kunark Ascending — Returns to Kunark; involves dragon lore
- Planes of Prophecy — Signature involving the Planes of Power from EverQuest 1 lore
- Chaos Descending — Set in the Elemental Planes
- Blood of Luclin — Signature on Luclin with the Overseer system introduction
- Visions of Vetrovia — More recent expansion signature chain
- Ballads of Zimara — Expands into the realm of Djinn and fire giants
- Mahara — Most recent expansion content (check current patch notes for specifics)
Tradeskill Signature Quests
EQ2 also has Tradeskill Signature Quests — separate quest chains for crafters that advance an entirely independent narrative while rewarding crafting-relevant items, rare recipes, and tradeskill experience.
Tradeskill Signature Quests start from the Tradeskill Trainer in your home city and run parallel to the adventure chain for each expansion. They’re fully soloable as crafting instances.
Tips for Signature Quest Completion
- Do them in order — Earlier expansion chains set up later ones narratively
- Don’t skip the dialogue — EQ2’s writing is above average for MMOs; Signature stories are worth reading
- Check prerequisites — Some Signature Quests require completing a previous chain first
- Solo instance difficulty scales to your character — they’re designed to be completable without a group
- Group dungeon steps are the most common failure point — if you’re stuck, join the LFG channel or server Discord to find groups
- Claim your rewards from the quest completion — some rewards are in your claim window, not automatically given
