AdventureQuest Worlds Free Classes Guide
AdventureQuest Worlds (AQW) has an extensive class system, but many of the best classes require either Member status (subscription) or AdventureCoins (AC, the premium currency). The good news is that a strong roster of completely free classes exists — and some of them are genuinely excellent even by endgame standards.
Starting Classes (Always Free)
Every player begins with access to four starting classes available from the class shop in Battleon town:
| Class | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior | Melee DPS / Tank | Good survivability; basic but effective |
| Mage | Magic DPS | High damage; lower defence |
| Rogue | Melee DPS | Faster attacks; good for soloing |
| Healer | Support / Sustain | Strong self-healing; weaker at solo killing |
These four classes are solid for starting the game. Warrior and Healer are the most durable; Mage deals the most damage but dies faster.
Strong Free Classes You Can Earn In-Game
Beyond the starting four, several excellent classes are completely free — earned through quests, reputation grinding, or class vendors in specific areas. No real money is required.
Necromancer
How to Get: Farm the Necromancer reputation at Ravenscar (undead-themed zone accessible from the world map). Complete quests to build reputation with the Necromancer faction. Once reputation reaches a high enough rank, the Necromancer class is purchasable with in-game gold.
Why It’s Good: Necromancer is a powerful DoT (damage over time) and pet class. It summons an undead companion and applies multiple DoTs, providing consistent damage with good survivability. It’s one of the best free farming classes in the game.
DragonSlayer
How to Get: Available from the DragonSlayer class shop (accessible in the early areas of the game). No real money required — purchased with in-game gold.
Why It’s Good: Strong DPS against Dragon-type enemies (and there are many dragons in AQW). Also performs well in general content. Easy to obtain and use.
Paladin
How to Get: Earn the Paladin class by completing the Paladin class quest chain. This involves questing in Good-aligned zones and building reputation. The entire path is free.
Why It’s Good: Paladin is a hybrid of damage and healing, with good AoE capability. Useful for both solo and group content.
StarLord
How to Get: Obtained through the StarLord quest chain, completely free. The quests are accessible at lower levels.
Why It’s Good: Provides decent AoE and support capabilities. Not the most specialised, but a reliable free option.
Shaman
How to Get: Available through reputation farming in specific zones. No AC required.
Why It’s Good: Reliable balance of damage and healing. Works well for beginners who find Healer too passive but Mage too fragile.
How Classes Work in AQW
Class Ranks
Every class in AQW has ranks 0 through 10 (or 11 in some classes). You increase rank by:
- Equipping the class and killing monsters
- Using class skills in combat
Each rank unlocks a new passive bonus or improves the class’s damage/survivability. A Rank 10 class is significantly more effective than the same class at Rank 1.
Tip: Always rank your preferred class to at least Rank 4 before judging it — early ranks underrepresent the class’s full potential.
Skills
Each class has 4 skills (mapped to keys 1-4):
- Auto Attack (key 1): Basic strike; generates mana
- Skills 2–4: Active abilities with mana costs and cooldowns
Learning which skills to press and in what order (the rotation) is the key to playing any class effectively.
Member and AC Classes: Are They Necessary?
Many of AQW’s most powerful classes require a Membership (subscription) or AdventureCoins — the premium currency. Examples:
- Chaos Shaper (AC)
- Legendary Hero (AC)
- Evolved Shaman (Member)
- Void Highlord (AC, considered one of the strongest endgame classes)
These classes are stronger than free options for high-end content. However:
- Free players can complete the vast majority of AQW’s story content without them
- Free farming classes like Necromancer allow solo farming of most non-raid content
- Many events offer free class tokens that can be exchanged for temporary AC class usage
If you enjoy AQW and play long-term, a one-month membership to unlock a single strong class permanently is often worthwhile. But the game is very playable as a free-to-play account with the classes above.
Recommended Progression Path for Free Players
- Start as Warrior — durable and forgiving while you learn the game
- Switch to Mage for faster early-game killing
- Farm Necromancer as soon as possible — best free farming class
- Unlock Paladin through quests — good for boss fights and group content
- Rank everything to 10 before investing in a new class
This path requires no real money and provides strong coverage of DPS, tanking, and support roles.
